cheapest would be nitrous and youd have exact same mileage during regular driving. what are they rated at stock? not sure if it could handle the shot needed to get to 350 without work but never read up on teh 289.

bump the compression, some headwork, wild cam and a monster carb, headers and a nice free flowing exhaust. sure theres other little details youd need to do also.

Tall order for a small engine. While doable, it certainly won't be tame or "easy" on gas. I would suggest a stroker kit to make it a 332 CID. Eagle makes a great kit to do this. The 289 and 302 blocks are virtually identical, so all the stuff that fits a 302, will fit the 289. The 289 heads may have too small a chamber for pump gas.

You're going to need more airflow than your stock heads have to achieve 350 horsepower. Torque is what you need anyway, if you want mileage. I'd suggest you put your 289 in the garage and save it for the day you want to restore your car. In the mean time, find a late model, or early, 302. Next, I'd get a set of canfield heads. I don't work for them or have any relation, but they were the best performing out-of-the-box head I've seen. This was verified on my Superflow SF-300. (Running 10.60 e.t. in 2700lb, 347 c.i. 88 'stang with 1.94 valves. No porting, just cleaned-up bowls.) Next, contact a cam company directly and tell them what you have and they will recommend a cam, lifters, etc. You can run whatever compression you can afford. Put on a good intake, carb., headers and you're ready to have a good time. [Paint the heads blue and tell everyone it's a 289.] :) Just my 2 cents.

actually they ARE identical. the only difference between the two is the stroke.
stock 67 c-code 289 is rated at 225 hp (under ideal conditions) so really you're only looking to add about 120 hp or so. start with a 4 barrel carb, performance intake, headers (or hi-po manifolds from a k-code 289), dual exhaust. You won't start to see any major hp gains unless you get into the internals. You'll want to swap the heads, put in a slightly more aggressive cam, stroke it, bore it. Your car's potential is tied directly into your bank account.
