Progress: The Pimpin' Lincoln!

Hey all,

Here's my next project that I'm gonna be posting progress pics of. It's AMT's 1965 Lincoln Continental convertible Prestige kit. The wheels in the picture are NOT the ones that will be going on the car, but there will be something of similar diameter. Maybe some Hoppin' Hydros Diamond 20s or a set of chromed something or other.
Also, the front will be level with the rear, as it looks like it's got a downwards slope in this pic. As anybody who's ever seen one of these cars knows, it sits level and looks great that way. Color is as yet undecided. I could do something simple, but if I find the right colors, I might do some kind of fade-away with a metallic or pearl over white or light cream.
Doorhandles will probably be shaved, but otherwise, the body should be stock. The interior will probably host some leopard skin upholstery.
I haven't decided if I want to use the rear fender skirts. If I do, the rear wheels will be completely invisible, but the car will look sleeker. What do you think?

That is one sweet car. I almost bought a 64 continental, it was cherry. I want a 66' though not a 64'. I think they look sinister in black. I just love the rear suicide doors. Either way the lincoln is PIMP! :smokin:

Yeah, where on earth did you find that kit? I've been half assed looking for one myself. This is going to be a mad hot project. Gorgeous, stylish car. Freakin' great. Go without the fender skirts, I'd say. I think they clutter the flanks of cars like this, actually.

Phil, This looks to be another awesome build.
I love those old linc's. I like your style.
Here is a pic of a Linc I shot in Iowa:

Youve beat me to it, I picked up this kit at a show in Jan this year with the idea of doing what your doing. So will keep an eye on this, see where you go with it. BTW what you plan on doing with the stationwagon roof? My kit has the glass but no outer shell any chance of me getting it off you?

I have no intention of using the roof. PM me if you want it, we'll work it out.

73SD, I already have that pic on my hard drive, along with a few other similar ones. It will have the same flavor as that, though.

I picked up the kit at the local model show last weekend. I got it for a good price, otherwise I would have passed on it.

I'm currently trying to figure out which wheels would look good with this car. I can't afford to buy a million different sets and see them in person, so I'm looking at a lot of pictures and trying to get info before I buy any wheels. Rest assured, the ones I get will be mad pimp and will suit the style of the build to a T.

I'm still undecided on the skirts. I'll tape them on and get a feel for them for a few days.

Thanks for the support, I'll try to keep you as up to date as possible on this one.

I haven't forgotten about this one, I just received some model bling in the mail today courtesy of malsheem.

Sorry for the dark pics, I think it's the reflection of the license plate that makes the rest darker. The rims are Aoshima's 19" Kranze LXZ's straight out of the box. I think they look great on the car! They're the perfect diameter overall, the body sits flat on the floor and the tops of the tires just snuggle up to the underside of the body.

I haven't decided yet on the color of the car, but if I go with black, I may just paint the wheel spokes black as well. What do you think?

I might throw some primer on it this evening or tomorrow. I've also decided to keep the door handles to show off the fact that they're sucide doors, and I won't be using the skirts because the wheels are just too nice!

Comments and questions welcome,

I found it on the back of my car. ;) I live in Laval.

Thanks for the comments from all of you, the rims will be staying chrome and there will be no fender skirts. I'm currently working on a Revell Civic, and it's almost done, so as soon as that's out of the way, the Lincoln will be pulling up front and center on my bench. Gotta see what I can use for brakes... those wheels have so much open space! :sunglasse

Taking up the digging theme of this thread, I'm digging it up from the dead!

I've been really busy with a career change that's kept me away from the bench, but I've gotten some work done on the Pimpin' Lincoln in the last few weeks.

http://images10.fotki.com/v192/photos/3/35531/1511969/P6180499-vi.jpg

I've sprayed several coats of Semi-gloss black on it with a lot of sanding in between to work out some serious flaws in the paint that I made.

Over top of that now lies a pearl clear coat. I'm currently working on all the chrome, but I ran out. When it's all (or mostly) done, I'll post up another update.

Once the chrome is done, I'll spray a final coat of straight clear to seal it all up.

So after 6 whole months, the Pimpin' Lincoln is back from the grave!

EDIT to include second pic.

It's not done yet. Since this pic, I have added a strip of BMF on the horizontal stripe (I know it's supposed to be leather like the rest of the seat, but it looks good!) As well as around the top edges of the back part of the seat (This is how it is on the 1:1). Still some more work to do, then I think I will shoot a dullcote over it all to remove the sheen.

What do you think?

Well i'm back home after about 6 weeks of almost constant traveling. I sat down and did some BMF on the Pimpin' Lincoln today. Man, what a PITA it was to do the fender trim... I actually chipped the paint a little on the front fenders right along the edge of the BMF, but I'm not gonna try to fix it. I've tried fixing minor flaws in the past, and the result was worse than the original problem, or it was not worth the effort.

Anyways, I'll have some pics when the BMF is done. I'll try to get it done before I hit the road on Thursday again.

I've slowly been getting some work done on this sled, and I don't want to jinx anything, but the end is almost within sight!

http://images15.fotki.com/v11/photos/3/35531/1511969/PA020006-vi.jpg

You can se that I did some more detail work on the interior. Below, you can see the flocking I put on the carpet. Plush!

http://images14.fotki.com/v222/photos/3/35531/1511969/PA180035-vi.jpg

In the pic below, the light isn't great but the BMF is done. I had a hard time with the vent window frames on both sides, but it's good enough for me. I replaced the piece at the top of the windshield because it had too many wrinkes in it.

http://images9.fotki.com/v169/photos/3/35531/1511969/PA180033-vi.jpg

Since this pic, I drybrushed the rear fender emblems with silver, and shot some more clear pearl over the whole thing.

Now I'm working on setting the ride height. I have to make new wire axles because the kit ones aren't long enough for the Kranze LXZ's, and I have to drill new mounting holes in the chassis to get it to sit lower.

I'll be putting the engine in, but it's gonna be basic black. The hood won't be glued shut, but I won't be opening it ever anyways.

Feedback appreciated!

Hey guys, sorry I didn't see the last few replies until now. Tonio, that's a pretty sweet ride... but mine will be nicer!

No new pics to show, I've been playing with my new 1:1 ride, so I haven't been at the bench in 3 weeks or so. I had the idea of using photoreduced (not photoetched!) disc brakes behind the wheels so I found a suitable photo on the internet and have reduced them to a suitable size. When I get time, I'll cut them out and see how convincing they look.

If that doesn't work, I bought a set of resin rotors and calipers, but they're more serious racing gear than street cruiser stuff. If I have to use them, I will.

More updates when there's something to show. Till then, patience is the rule of thumb.

Thanks for the continued support and interest, this model will be done pretty soon and it will certainly be worth the wait!

Phil

I got cracking yesterday on the Pimpin' Lincoln's ride height. In previous pics, you saw the body sitting on the wheels. The two pics below may look the same as the old ones, but here's the difference: This time, the model actually has axles in it!

This kit has wire axles, so I had to drill new holes higher up in the chassis to get it to sit lower. I actually ended up drilling several sets of holes that kept bringing the car closer to the ground. Once I got to the height you see below, the tops of the tires in the rear were touching the underside of the body, stuffed as far as they would go into the fenders. As luck would have it, this would be the same height that sits the cassis firmly on the ground! How low can you go? Not much lower than this!

As for the front, I had to put a little more effort into it. I hogged out the tops of the fenderwells to probably less than half their original thickness and drilled the axle holes accordingly.

You can also see a resin brake rotor behind the rear wheel in the photos. This is a Performance Resin piece that I picked up this past weekend at a show here in Montreal. They popped onto the inner hub of the wheel like they were meant to be there! It is still unpainted in the pictures, but that will change, of course.

I also sanded down the underside of the transmission crossmember, because it turned out to be the lowest point of the chassis. Now, the chassis sits more or less flat on the ground. To get this car to sit any lower would require a lot more work (or cheating). the axles from the kit were actually to short to use with these wheels, so I found a suitable piece of wire and cut them to the lengths I needed, shorter in the front than in the rear for some reason.

More updates to come when work progresses. Off the top of my head, I still have to paint and install the brakes, install the firewall and rad support, finish painting the hood, and maybe install the engine. That is still undecided. What would you do?

Thanks for looking, and any feedback is appreciated!

Phil

Still alive, folks. Still alive. I got to doing some more work on the Pimpin' Lincoln in the last few days. I'm on the road again tomorrow, so I'll try to finish it up tonight.

The new pics don't reveal much progress, but if you look carefully, you'll see the window glass installed, and the chassis, interior and body have been put together. The brake rotors are resin cast pieces that look like some racing hardware, but they fill the wheels nicely at all 4 corners.

As always, your feedback really helps me keep building, so speak up!
