Hey guys i just got an 85 blazer, so the 6x8s i had in my explorer wont fit anywhere.. up front im gonna need 4x6s.. when i was looking for speakers through a friends crutchfield catalogue, i saw 4x6 speaker plates, with a midrange woofer and tweeter seperate in a plate that mounts in place of the speaker. Im sure most of you know what im talking about. would these sound better than a regular speaker because its more like a component system? have any of you had any experience with them? if i might run a high pass filter to them after i get my sub will it be better to stick with the regular speakers?

ahh those, well a true "4x6" speaker is going to have quite a bit more cone area and displacement than those, meaning more output and better midbass. I do have a feeling those plate speakers would have a better midrange though, and I base that on absolutely nothing :).

yeah thats about what i was thinking.. so i think ill stick to a normal 4x6.. i know itll sound good plus my selection wont be limites to just like polk & infinity (although im sure if i looked i could find more brands).. thanks man

I got something else to think about...
keep in mind that the normal coax gives up surface area in the middle and some of the cone's rigidity to mount the tweets, so the 1/2" gained on each corner vice a 4" round kinda balance them out as far as that, and then, you'll want to consider the fidelity aspects of componets vs coax...

what exactly do you mean? is that saying that the plates may be better because they are more like a component system? if so why is that

well, go up to circuit city or best buy, they will probly have 4x6 plates and normal 4x6's on display. i've heard those plates and i'd reccomend the normal 4x6's instead.
