How does a tunable muffler work?

Alright, no dishing me here. I might know a lot of things but mufflers have never, ever been one of my highlights. But the question is, how exactly does a tunable muffler work? Cause I've heard the exsist and now want one cause I want to be able to go to school and work with it sounding like a normal muffler but if I want to show off somewhere, I can tune it to be loud. How soft and loud will a tunable muffler get? Can you get it to sound like a normal muffler but tune it to be really loud? How easy is it to tune it?

Most tuneable mufflers use a plug like thing that stick in the opening and the plug reduces the size out put hole and is packed with fiberglass (or other sound deadening material) so that it makes the muffler quieter.
Then there are SuperTrapp mufflers that use discs and you have alot more controle over it than the ones mentialed above as you can change out discs, add discs, remove discs, or put in differnt combinations of discs to alter the sound. They look rather odd though.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but generally the more air flow moving out of your muffler will produce a louder sound. How these mufflers are tunable is they will come with a removable silencer that ristricts air flow, the silencer itself is adjustable by opening holes on it or closing them. As far as the sound goes... I will not sound like a stock muffler even with the silencer, but it will calm it down quite a bit. Tuning it is simply turning a screw. that screw doesnt tune it; It keeps it from falling out.

There are actually 2 screws on the silencer that adjust the tuning and 1 screw that holds the silencer in the muffler. On my muffler maybe not all.

I had one before that had just a removable tip..didn't change the sound output much. Then I bought one with the turnable disc thingy for my crx on ebay but It looked gay so I sold it to this highschool kid for his eclipse for 60 bucks (and I paid about 30 hehe) and he put it on..sounds pretty cool. Now I can't stand the look of fart cans..every damn car going down thel road here has one now..jeeps..vans you name it.

haha, i'd jus stick to whatever performs better and sounds better. I myself don't like the look, it's weird. I wouldn't mind a low growl, but nothing high pitch like a bumble bee down the road nasteh. Something quieter at idle, but loud if you step on it.

Those tunable things are ok, i wouldn't buy one though. Spend ur money on a better performance one

I have one. It came with the silencer plug thing that's held on by a screw and nut. You're supposed to take it out by putting a broom stick handle or something in it and slide it out, ride around with it open for awhile then later if you want to silence it you can otherwise it'll stay stuck in there. Anyway, it has virtually no tip to speak of so it looks like an anus. When I put the silencer in, it restricted the air flow and made it sound like crap so I took it out and never use it. I know my car is loud. Strange though... after getting the car running/tuned right it sounds pretty good... not at all like an epileptic bumble bee on crack LMAO

So really, the silencer doesn't quiet anything down much? Almost sounds like the disk method would be the best!
