What is a good spring/shock combo??

I have a 94 g20 with 106k miles and I'm thinking that the suspension is shot. I believe it's never been changed at all. Either way, I'd like to upgrade the suspension with some aftermarket parts (can't see myself spending lots of money for a factory suspension kit :) ) I'd like the ride to be firmer, not harsh and lowered about 1 inch -- any ideas??
