hi all
i am new to the forum so help me out a bit plz. i have a 98 corolla and in the morning when the engine is cold the car is supposed to maintain a high rpm, but it does'nt. and because of this i have to wait 5-10 mins for the engine to warm up b4 i can go anywhere. if i try to go anywhere the engine shakes and looses power. the check engine light is always on. i have'nt been able to take it to the shop to check on the code, but i want to be a little prepared b4 i go to those guys. what do u think the problem could be. and by the way the engine was changed in the car, i dunno what the previous one was but the new one is 4a somethin. i dunno much abt cars so plz help!!

edit
a little more info.
1) i checked near the engine there seems to be a swithch on the right side of the engine where a wire is supposed to go. i foud the wire and connected it, the engine would not start. so i remove it, start the engine and connect it again. the check engine light goes away but now the engine revs up uncontrollably, i mean it starts screaming. it becomes normal as soon as i remove the wire, but the check engine light comes back on.
2) as soon as the temperature hits the first line on the temp guage, the engine becomes absolutely perfect and smooth.
3) i just recently changed all the belts (timing, steering etc etc etc).

ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SWITCH
This sounds like the problem.
The switch is located behind the alternator/generator.
A rather inexpensive part though. If it's broken, it will tell the ECU it is either hot already or freezing cold all the time . This will definetly effect the idle.

If you PM me I will send along a PDF to R and R it.
