Can't open hood

The hood release handle has broken on my 2000 Jimmy. When it first happened, the hood popped open. I thought that the cable was stillconnected to the release, so I didn't woory as I could still pull on the cable from inside the car with pliers. Now, when I pull on the cable, nothing happens.
Can I get to the hood release from the outside somehow?
