exhaust questions

hi, I'm sure people have talked about this farther back, but I havne't had a chance to look into it too much....
i want to get exhaust on my 95 jimmy(4.3 vortech: sadly, it's still stock) but I don't want it to sound like a little motor that's trying, I want it to sound kinda beefy, if that's possible.
I'm thinkin it'd be nice if i got something that could give it a little bit more oomph too....
turbo exhaust? I dont' really know what that is, but it sounds like something kinda cool and it's pretty cheap.
flowmaster? don't really know anything about that other than i've got alot of friends that wouldn't put anything else on their vehicles
oh yeah, and what's my bolt pattern?

best thing to do with trucks is take it up to a muffler shop and tell them exactly what you told us

Take it to an exhaust place and have them give you a quote. Don't buy an exhaust system on-line or anything like that (they're WAY over-priced).
Do you want single of dual exhaust pipes? That will make a big difference in the sound AND performance.
As far as mufflers, I am one of those people who only go with Flowmaster, no matter what kind of vehicle it is. Their sound is the best, even though people will try to say otherwise. Their mufflers go "40 series", "50 series", "60 Series", etc., with 40 being the loudest and deepest sounding of them all. 50 is still really good sounding, but it is a little quieter than the 40. I couldn't tell you what the Flowmaster 40's would sound like on your Jimmy, but I know on big blocks they are extremely loud (louder than no mufflers). So anyways, I would go with either of those two.
Hope that helps!

I put a Flowmaster dual exhaust on my 97 Jimmy and it sounds nice. It sounds great with the flowmasters. It sorta sounds like a v8 almost, its pretty beefy. At the shop i took it to, i got it done for $195.

Full dual or just single into dual mufflers and dual tailpipes?

No problem, the Flow 40 is a little raspy and not as low and growly.

no, its not a true dual, its not even dual mufflers, its just a single into one muffler with 2 outlet holes into 2 tailpipes. sounds great, and i dont lose all the backpressure like you would with a true dual

and about the Ravins, I had that on my Firebird, and to tell you the truth, the firebird was wayyy louder than the Jimmy even though it was only a 3.8 v6, a smaller engine than the 4.3 in the Jimmy. They sounded really nice and throaty too, a deep low loud sound. I loved them. I would say if youre going for a louder noise, go with the Ravins. The only reason I didnt put Ravin on my Jimmy was cause those were around $350 at Midas when I put them on my bird, and the Flows were only $195. I was broke, or i wouldve went with the Ravins

Ravin's should not be that expensive.
I had mine installed with taxes and everything for US$175.

with yours now, is that true duals? if it is, i dont' wanna loose backpressure like jacky said, is that going to happen?

No, one Ravin Z55 single in, single out.

ahhh, that's not true. all new mufflers will be kind of "tinny" sounding, but once some carbon builds up on everything, it will be very deep sounding. If a Flowmaster 40 sounds raspy, there's something definatly wrong :loser: .

Trust me, you put a Ravin and a Flow 40 beside each other and the Ravin will be a LOT more growly and low.
I don't know about you, but if I has carbon throughout my exhaust system, I wouldn't deem that a good thing.

that means not everything is burning right, right?
carbon is a byproduct of... oil?
i've also got a really fast kinda quiet ticking or something... is this normal, does it have something to do with the vortech? i figured it was a little exhaust leak?(which i know if that is the case, i need to get it fixed before it gets bigger)
sorry boys, i know i'm ignorant  , but that's why i'm here

Carbon is a by product of too rich of a fuel mixture.
The ticking could be anywhere in the exhaust system.
Best bet is to take a lot underneath when you first start it up when it is cold and look for the puffs of condensation coming out of the particular area that is leaking.

Put on a new exhaust system, and after a month or so it won't be perfectly clean steel anymore. Carbon builds up on it, and the sound becomes deeper and louder.
Trust me, I've put on more than enough exhaust systems to figure this out.
yes, the Raven might sound better to you, but that does not make the Flow. sound raspy!!
Carbon will build up on any vehicle over a period of time. This will happen to all vehicle. Happened to stock vehicles I have, happened with the 454 I just built and put in, happened with the crate 502 that I just put in my car.....happens to any vehicle!!!!!

You might want to check your cap and rotor. Mine clicks when I first start my car up. Sometimes the clicking doesn't go away. I plan on replacing mine ASAP.

Not mine.
so the inside of your exhaust is just as pretty and shiny as when it was new...??
also... so carbon is a byproduct of oil then, since too rich a mixture means too much oil, right?

No but it is not covered with a layer carbon at all.
Carbon is the sign of a rich FUEL mixture caused by a engine that needs a tuneup or the timing is retarded.

i don't get what a rich fuel mixture is... does that mean that there's too much fuel compared to air?

Yes, the perect air to fuel ratio is 14.7:1
When you are running rich or the air filter is clogged you will run 11:1 or so and run with to much fuel and not enough air to properly burn it.
