Oil Change Question

I've never driven under 3,000 miles in 3 months time but now find that I am using my car less. The oil change sticker says 11/11/04 but I've only driven 2,000 miles since my last change. Do I need to change the oil or is that just a way of throwing my money away? Appreciate any advice on the subject. Pros - Cons Opinions etc. Thanks all. :smokin:

Thanks for the reply. Changed the oil. It was mainly city driving so I figured might as well. Appreciate your input though.

a good rule is about every 7,000 miles. unless you drive hard all the time, then about every 3,500 or so. when in doubt, do it anywayz. an extra oil change never hurts

if any body reads this this is your basics for oil
1. the more you change your oil the better

2. never mix oils 10w30 is 10w30 if you add a quart of 5w30 it will bubble up and seize the enjine

3. full snythetic is BEST and its thermal breakdown does take longer but I dont ever think about going over 3000

4.10w30 goes in your car in the summer and 5w30 is for winter

5. for higher mileage change oil sooner will last a lot longer

that is your basics

really civic16 mixing an oil will make it bubble and seize your motor??? where did you come up with that? thats like saying your muffler bearings should be inspected and rotated periodicly........hmmm

listen here if you don't believe me mix 5w30 with 10w30 and let me know how your mazda runs when your oil starts foam up and the oil pump doesn't pick the oil up, and if mufflers had berrings it doesn't sound like you wouldn't know s##t about them

you are a dumba-- I just topped my mazda off with 10-40 but when i changed my oil i used 10-30 about 2500 miles ago if i really dont know sh__ than prove it they are all made from the same beginning petroleom product go back to sleep

actually just to prove you are retarded lets look at your original post civic16 #2 you said never mix the two oils 5-30 and 10-30 it will sieze your motor??? Then you suggest(#4) that you use the two before mentioned oils depending on the season so when winter comes how the he_l do you get all that 10-30 out of the motor before you put the 5-30 in??uhhhhh duhhhh you cant their will still be residue all over your motor , oil will sit up on your valve etc. etc. once again its ok dude just go back to sleep or keep to things you know.... like obviously nothing!

correctetion on my last post with regards to engine oil you should change your oil every six month or 6k miles as the oil thickens over time thus causeing problems. as with blending oil he's right check this site if in doubt http://www.scooterhelp.com/genmaintain/crankcase.oil.html it covers every thing you need to know about oils cars and bikes.

if any body reads this this is your basics for oil
1. the more you change your oil the better *WRONG*

2. never mix oils 10w30 is 10w30 if you add a quart of 5w30 it will bubble up and seize the enjine

3. full snythetic is BEST and its thermal breakdown does take longer but I dont ever think about going over 3000

5. for higher mileage change oil sooner will last a lot longer

Lets see....

1. The more you change your oil the better, is completely wrong. And im glad you tend to think this. A steady OCI with comprehensive oil analysis is the best way to determine a OCI and tell you when you should change your oil.

2. First off, engine, is spelled with a G, not a J. Second off, this is total bullshit. Completely unsubstantiated. You can mix any oil with any oil. Including synthetic with nonsynthetic, and semi-synthetic. You obviously know jackshit about oil, TBN, CST, and general intelligence with your spelling and english skills. MAD TYTE JDM SKILLZ YO!

3. This statement makes me laugh, "thermal breakdown" is a term used commercially to sell you a product. Synthetic oil just like conventional oil unless Ester based (IE: Your synthetic is a PAO base stock) will protect for X amount of miles with no problem, usually around 7000 miles of highway\semi-city driving. If your oil is ester-based (IE: Redline oils) you can go much longer as Esters are better for slipstream oil chemistry, allowing the oil to protect the engine with a thiner coat of film over moving mechanical parts.

4. Wrong, wrong wrong. The thinner viscosity does not always make the right choice, if you do many hours of driving during winter 10w-30 would still be a good idea because it allows for more protection over time, where 5w-30 gives better startup protection. The win=me.

5. This doesn't even make sense, your english sucks my left nut. Changing the oil sooner in a higher mileage engine will yeild you no great benefit. You would be better off using a product like Auto-RX to clean the ring packs of sludge and varnish and then switch over to a good synthetic like mobil one that is PAO based as the ester base stock would clean the older engine out more and possibly cause oil blockage. However if used a product like auto-rx that wouldn't be a problem at all.

Overall you have shown us no good oil change habbits or information. You are not very well educated in oils, try doing some research and knowing wtf you are talking about before telling other people how to manage there vehicles.

Geez guys. Let's get to a more productive diatribe even though diatribes and such are for me like "sleep - those tiny little slices of death - how I love them;" (EA Poe). Why don't we move on to oil filters. I use a K&N. Any feelings, perceptions, repercussions????? Use their air filter too. Take one look at Hyundai air filter and then at K&N. See the difference in "fit and finish." (now I know that's technispeak) Even to a novice it is clear that one is vastly superior in construction to the other. Whether it works better or not is your call. I'm of the opinion that oil is oil and synthetic may be better but I ain't spending mucho donero on oil for a cheap 4 cylinder car. I'd rather use 10W30 or 5-40 appropriately and spend a couple extra bucks on the filter. :smokin:

well, i am the other way around. i dont buy synthetic oils, but i like to do my homework and try to get the best dino for my money. My last oil change was with mobile clean 5000, which i think is a pretty good oil. Also, i am fond of Castrol GTX Drive Hard. as for an oil filter, i usually go with the Pureolater Pure One. For the money it is a not a bad filter. whatever you do, please dont go completely cheap and buy a Fram. K&N filters are more expensive, but you get what you pay for, if that makes sense. they are a more expensive filter, but they are also a better filter, they really focus on flow and not on filtering. A K&N filter lets more oil thorugh, but does not filter it as well.

I hear you Mario: Definitely agreed. I'm not sold on synthetic; at least not in an a to b car. You are definitely correct on the flow deal. Kind of same thing with the air filter. I think most important thing is to change oil and filter every 3,000 K or close to that. Even the worst filter and oil every 3,000 is probably (and don't quote me on this) better than the best every 7,500 - 10,000 which I've heard from people using synthetics. All the best.
