I am out looking at Japanese Domestic Market engines for a few of my cars and I was wondering how Kilowatts translated to American Horsepower and also how torque was measured. Thanks in advance for your help.

One KW is equal to 1.341022 HP
One HP is equal to 0.7456999 KW
Go to www.joshmadison.com/software/convert and download the program "convert". Its sweet and really helps me out on stuff like this.
Torque is oftem measured in Nm (newton-meters) over there.
One Nm is equal to 0.737561 lb-ft
One lb-ft is equalt to 1.35582 Nm
Sometimes HP is measured in DIN (a German thing) and uses slightly different protocols. Usually the difference is negligible; like my BMW was measured with 168 HP in Germany, but 170 over here.
