Hello everybody, I've held off for a while on getting a camaro and am now looking again, I recently went and saw one today that seemed like it might work out. 1999 Z28, 66,000 miles good condition and 6 speed. The only problems were upon harder accelerations the engine seemed a little rough, like a motor does around the time of a needed oill change, (It was dark outside so I haven't checked it yet). Also upon acceleration at first in first gear there was a very obvious and fairly loud whine from the rear (like imports sound in reverse gear), then it queited down a bit in the city but was again louder when I hit the freeway. I really don't know what it could be, I've never heard it in other Z-28's. Other than that the car drove smooth and had pleny of power to spare. Also Is it worth it to get an SS over a Z28 or not and how do the performance numbers differ (handling and speed). Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

sounds like the rear gears need adjusting

I agree with 89 about the rear gears. Also the SS had (not looking at references here so excuse my estimates) about 10-20 more HP... buying it over a Z28 would be more for the name and bragging rights. They're a little faster stock but for the price difference, you coudl put the extra money into Z and make it faster. I used to want an 02 SS, but learned this and changed my mind haha, a few years down the road a just want an 00-02 Z28. :2cents:

the rear-end gears either need to be lashed or its possible there might be aftermarket gears in there of a higher ratio. the higher the ratio the more they whine...

Thanks for the replies, any idea on how much it would cost to adjust the gears, also, is handling much improved on the SS over the z28 or not? Thanks again.
