Glossy decals on top of flat paint

I have planned for a project for a while but I don't know how I should deal with it.
The cowling parts of the bike I will do is painted flat black and on top of that there will be some decals. It would be easy to do the paint job glossy, add the decals and then cover all of it with flat clear if it wasn't for the fact that these decals shall have a glossy finish. Some of the decals are also pretty big so I don't know if it's possible to use Future instead of the decal glue which I know work on smaller decals.

Any ideas are much appreciated

I don't think that it would be possible, Only solution are high tech decals that have no clear part. You could play with decals in way to cut out all of the clear parts but this is a tough job. Good luck anyway (future wan't help much since you will have glossy decal, together with clear part, instead of silverish clear part).

yes, you are right about that Sasa.
I was thinking of cutting the clear film away on the larger ones but on the smaller ones it will not work. There aren't a lot of decals I should say, and most of them are white wich can work in flat but one idea could be to brush paint the colored ones, wich are larger areas with glossy clear afterwords.
That would leave the process like this.

* Prime
* Glossy paint job
* Decalling
* Flat clear over all cowling parts
* Brush paint gloss clear over some areas

Could that work or is it a no no?

That is probably the best and the easiest way, I would probably do it that way. Is it Yamaha or Honda we are talking about :)

I was thinking of making the Camel Honda test bike from Sepang this february. I think it's clean and very good looking. Did the Teléfonica testbike from 2002 earlier and liked it a lot. But this sucker is flat black...

Nice one I didn't even see this picture before, but that Camel will be very tricky indeed.

From ym past experience you will have a very hard time getting the decals to set properly on flat paint. You best bet is to do the whol car in a gloss then apply the decals and then hit it with a few coats of dullcote

Gotta say from the photo the decals look to have a pretty similar finish to the fairing. I'd go gloss paint, decals and then a flat coat with a little satin/gloss chucked... that isn't a traditional flat finish to my eyes. Should be a wicked model, keep us posted!

Yeah from that pic it looks like basecoat black hich os a bit of a semi gloss

Judging by the picture you posted I would say that is a semi-gloss finish overall. I would paint it gloss black and decal it and then seal it all with a good glossy clearcaot and then spray a nice semi-gloss overall. The Model Master semi-gloss is a very nice satin finish. Let us know how it all turns out.

hmm, I guess you're right. Didn't go that far in my thoughts...stopped at gloss or flat :rolleyes: I did a test on a scrap piece of plastic yesterday with gloss, semigloss and flat TS-black and with a nice satin finish over it as you say mikemechanic I think it will work out just fine. Thanks for your input, I'll keep you posted.
