Hi. Just today I tried turning on my a/c switch to 1 and i could hear it coming on but it wasn't blowing. I tried level 2 and still nothing. Then at level 3 and 4 it would work just fine (cold and everything). I read somewhere that there might be a resistor or something that controls the fans. Is this the source of my problems? Thanks for your help in advance.

check all your fuses for a start. what exatcly are you hearing if not the fans?

Thanks for the reply. I apologize I didn't explain it very well. When I turn the Fan switch to 1, the sound I hear is the a/c system (compressor? I don't know anything about a/c) engaging. I can feel the usual loss of engine power as well. And if I put my hands by the vents, I can feel a little bit of the cold air but it doesn't seem like the fans are blowing the cold air. The same thing occurs when i turn the fan switch to 2. However, when i turn it to level 3 or 4, it performs great, like nothing was wrong with it.
I'm thinking it's the fans not blowing when switched to 1 and 2. As for the fuses, what exactly do I check?

read the diagram on your fuse pannel, it should show you right where your ac fan and compressor fuses are... pull them and if they are smoked, then yo need to replace them(or it, if there is only one) if it was the fuse and you replace it, it should be fine, if not i would try checking all your wiring going to the fan. you could have a small break in the wire, and it is working on 3and4 because the electrical current is arc-ing over and completing the electrical current and it isnt completing on 1and2 cuz it isnt sending enough of a current to jump the gap. if it is a bad wire, it will only get worse, so if you want your ac to continue working you are gonna want to replace it soon. does the fan work in 1and2 when the heater is on???, or when you are just blowing regular air?????

The fans do not work on 1 and 2 even if its on just regular air. I checked the fuse box and the only fuse closely related was the AC/ Heater Relay and that fuse was fine. So if it's the wiring to the fan, how would I go about getting the a new wire and fixing/replacing it? Thanks a lot I really appreciate the help.

simply go down to checker or auto zone after pulling out all of your wires going to the unit. (to make things easy, grab a paper and pen and draw a simple diagram showing color and length of all the wires you have to take out of your car) purchase all of your wires, color code-ed. you might be able to use your old connection pieces, and splice them to your new wires. (make sure to use wire connectors, not just electrical tape) and tape over open wiring. this will help the new wires from grounding out, and keep them last longer.
hope this helps out a little bit.

oh also, check your relay wire first... if its a wiring problem, that is usually the first one to start shorting out, cuz of the extreme variance of electrical currant that runs through that particular wire. if that is the problem, try a larger gage wire(18-16g) this will keep that wire from corroding in the future.... IS THAT FUSE GOOD AS NEW OR JUST GOOD? if its only a little good, replace it too. also some cars have a fuse box under the hood... check those fuses.!!!!

Thanks a lot for the help. I have 2 more newbie questions though. How do I get to the unit and the wiring? As for the fuse, I replaced the fuse with a spare fuse that I had and it still had the problem. So how and where do I check the relay wire? Sorry for all the questions but this is the first time I've faced this kind of stuff.

im not exactly sure on your car... sorry. i dont have any ac in mine at all...never did, never will. i only did when i drove my mitsubishi. and its a totally different system, i just know those basics that i told you. most cars, however, have the fan system and all the wiring in the dash behind the cd player... right where all the controlls are for the fan and ac. i'll look and if you cant find it i will help out as much as possible. talk to you later
