I have a 1996 VW jetta gl, i recently bought it and the dealer (local) doesn't have the radio code and its on safemode. I heard there is a website where you can go and type in the vin # and it will give you the code. The vw dealership told me, they would charge me $30, and hey i'm only 17 and thats alot considering i don't have a job. some body please help me out.

Some dealers used to be willing to get the code for you at no charge, but they are fast disapperaing. You need the ID number off the sticker on the top of the radio & the car's VIN. The only site I know that has that info is the VW dealer access site & you have to know the dealer # & password to get in. Your only hope is that someone wrote it on the radio itself or the slim possibility it remains on a sticker on the side of the spare tire well. I have heard that it once resided there but was supposed to be removed by the dealer when they did their PDI inspection. It's a four digit code beginning with a zero or a one. Hey, that's <2000 possibilities. You get three tries then the radio locks up. Then you have to disconnect it & try again, how much time have you got?
