1996 Jetta Rough Idle / Stalling

I have a 1996 Jetta with 160K miles. The car has run perfectly for a long time. Over the weekend I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. The car runs must stronger now however when I come to a stop the idle will vary between 400-800rpm and many times will stall. The car is a manual.

Any ideas on what may have gone wrong? Mileage is up about 2 mpg after weekend work (Was 36 on highway now at 38) but rough idle is a real problem.

No engine lite issues.

Rclough has a fuel injected car. Regardless whether it's FI or carb, adjusting the throttle cable to make up for low idle is wrong. First make sure you didn't break any vacuum hose while doing your work. It might be best to try cleaning the throttle body/valve. It's easy to do it on the car. Remove the air intake tube from the throttle valve & open it up & spray with throttle body cleaner. Use a toothbrush & scrub then clean out a few more times. The car will be flooded when you finish so it might take a few seconds of cranking to start.
