Im18, Go to Autozone and get Haynes repair manual $14.99, it tells you how to check your codes by crossing wires in your computer hook up terminal under the hood and its probably going to be cheaper than a code scanner.

:banghead: I also have an 89 xj that I can not get codes out of & the Haynes manual for the 89 Cherokee does not seem to help. Am I missing something? :crying: Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly is the problem?
From AutoZone:
"Entering the self-diagnostic system on models prior to 1991 requires the use of a special adapter that connects with the Diagnostic Readout Box II (DRB-II). These systems require the adapter because all of the system diagnosis is done Off-Board instead of On-Board like most vehicles. The adapter, which is a computer module itself, measures signals at the diagnostic connector and converts the signals into a form which the DRB-II can use to perform tests. The MIL or a scan tool can be used to read codes."

There are a LOT OF SMALL problems. Where do I start, 220,000 miles & everythings kinda loose? Engine runs quiet, no smoke or clatter & 4WD works. $1200, not bad considering body is good I guess. Mostly electrical far as I can tell. Keeps overheating, after new rad, water pump, thermo, all hoses am still having prob & electric fans works hotwired, but will not come on byself. New sending unit for it & still does not work byself & 220* is not good running temp. Good water flow in block too. Don't know why though. Engine starts & runs on high idle continously, about 18-2000 rpm, MPFI O-ring leaks on 2 injectors, all info bulbs removed from dash lights, when replaced chk engine light stays on, parking brake lt stays on (all new drums, calipers, wheel cylinders, brake shoes & pads (not antilock) & metal lines & bled.) One of those, where do I start. Just figured that trying to get any codes out of it might help tell some of the engine malfunctions. New valve cover gaskets to fix leaks & clean all debri out so I could at least see the rocker arms. amazing 40 psi on oil warmed up w/rotella 15/40 in it. Surprisingly same press w/10W30. No turn signals in frnt but do work in back??? I have an Auto-Xray 6000 scanner, works on all my other vehicles but not this jeep  Anyway, you asked, ANY help whatsoever to this newbie would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

do you know the brand and part number of the adapter and the code reader?,
my jeep is working right now but i fill like it loose the power, i made the maintenance periodically but still the same, a few months ago suddenly didnt start, i check everything and i only found a loose wire in the oxigen sensor, i connected and it start again , so i went to the shop and they told me that the sensor isnt the problem, but they cant find any other problem, and i paid by the diagnosis, thats why i want a code reader if possible

As far as I know ,the older XJs don't store codes. It doesn't have a check engine light. It has a maintenance light but that is controlled by a mechanical timer. The only way I know of to check for faults is with a DRB 2.It runs through a sequence of tests and then it will give you faults. As far as aftermarket testers I don't know of anysince I am a tech at a dealer,we always used the DRB 2
