Engine Noise

I bought a 1986 BWM 325e and it wasn't running when I bought it, the timing belt broke and bent all the valves. I sent it to a shop and they replaced the head and valves and all the necessary gaskets, I drove it home and it ran ok but seemed a little loud, alot of pinging noise could be heard. I brought the car back and they readjusted all the valves to be sure they were on and they were and they also checked the cam and the rockers to see if they were the problem and they weren't, but the car still has this clicking noise. My friend has a car a couple of year newer with 20,000 more miles and his runs much quieter. Can anyone help me, would it be an injector problem, because it seems to be coming from that general area but I don't want to replace all 6 just to see and be wrong.

Get a screwdriver over 18 inches.

Use it like a mechanics stethoscope.

Place the plastic handle against your ear and use the metal tip to locate the source of the noise.

Be carefull around moving belts and parts.

Locate the source of the noise.

I would try cleaing out the fuel rail and the injectors and see if that solves anything. But from the 325's that Ive heard there is a pretty loud ticking noise.

But since all the valves got bent did the shop check to make sure the pistons werent screwded up. I dont think that would cause a ticking noise but the compression could be off or different the the other cylinders.

They told me that the pistons were scarred a little from the valves but no major damage to them, I was told that there may be a slight possibility that a piston may be loose hitting the cylinder wall, but it is unlikely and a compression check wouldn't determine that. I can hear the ticking noise mainly in the general area of the fuel injectors and again my friend as the same car a '90 I think with the same engine and 20,000 more mile and his is very quiet?

I noticed you said they "replaced the head". Needless to say that was necessary. But different year engines used different heads, even though, the engines were all 2.5L. The difference lies in the shape of the piston heads or tops. To make matters worse, form the outside one head looks very much like the other-not real helpful. The important thing is the cyl head casting number which is on the outside of the head in numbers about 1 inch high (size). The numbers you have now should be identical to the one they replaced. If not it could be a source of noise. If it is then something else is causing the noise. The engine should make no more noise than before the broken timing belt. Incidently, look to change belts every 60k. (for safety sake) Thanks
