Why can't they ever come in right?
Just had mine out today, and this Tylenol 3 stuff is way overrated. I was hoping it would knock me out and I could put a drill through my hand and not feel it, but I've taken 4 so far and my mouth still hurts like a MF. All it did was give me a headache.
My bottom right tooth broke on removal so my right side ended up swelling - now I'm freakin assymetrical for the next few days.
All I've had to eat today is some pureed stew, two things of apple sauce, and a popsicle.
And I think one of the stitches is coming out, or else it's growing.
Stupid wisdom teeth.

i had that done last year.
they originally thought that i only had the bottom teeth, so i was somewhat happy. then, upon me getting an X-Ray, they found out i DID in fact have the top teeth, but they were waaay up inside my gums. thus, they'd have to dig for them. yes, dig.
i looked like an extra from Alvin and the Chipmunks for about a week.
Mark, has your numbness at least gone away? for some reason, i couldn't feel the right side of my face for a whole 24 hours after the procedure. my left side came back after about 5 hours. so every time i tried to drink something, i'd end up with it all over the right side of my shirt.
another PITA is the gauze. i was a bleeder for some reason and this shit turns soggy as hell after only being in your mouth for about an hour. nasty tasting as well.
the first night i could eat solid food, after the swelling had gone down, i had hamburgers. a tiny piece of beef lodged itself in one of my fresh holes, causing infection and the entire right side of my face swelled up again for about a day until i managed to pick out the piece of beef.
not something i would like to go through again. good luck on your road to recovery! give us a chipmunk pic to laugh at.

Yep all 4 taken out. My top ones were perfectly straight and would have come in with no problems at all, but the bottom ones didn't have room, therefore the tops would have nothing to bite against and would eventually grow down into the bottom gum...ick. They weren't causing me any problems yet, but I figured I'd get them done here at home before I'm in Australia for 8 months, and after which I would no longer be in school and covered by my parents insurance.
I bled like crazy at first and was completely soaking several pieces of gauze in minutes. Once I returned home from the 20 minute drive from the doctor's office, I had a mouth nearly bursting since it was so full of blood despite the gauze - I immediatly went to the toilet and launched a mouthful of blood in. After about 30 minutes though I no longer needed gauze, would just get an occasional drip.
I actually can eat solid food, I just don't want anything getting stuck in there. Next up, mashed potatoes, which happens to be one of my fav foods :D
Numbness took about 4 hours or so to go away but yeah it's all gone now.
That was the first time I'd been sedated too (by IV), it was kinda neat. They put the needle in, which was no fun but I've had needles before - then I remember thinking "it still hurts even after it's been properly placed - don't get that with blood tests...," and then the next thing I knew I was sitting on a bed in the recovery room, with gauze in my mouth and Mom there.

I was scared shitless too - but I didn't even know it was happening because of the IV sedation. After that, with some Tylenol 3 in you, it's just a dull (though constantly noticeable) toothache - sucks but it's certainly bearable. Jaw hurts though too, half because it was open so long in the OR, but also because I can't fully close my mouth (because of the "holes" swelling, so the jaw never gets fully rested and hurts to move.

All mine grew in straight so I let them grow and my dentist just pulled the top two out. Didnt hurt at all and I went home and ate steak. My bottom two are still growing but I dont even see a need to take them out because they dont hurt and there is plenty of room for them so I'm leaving them in.

Apparently there's not many nerves in the top, so it either doesn't hurt at all, or very little to get those out. It's the bottoms that are bitches.
Haha, you know how goons in cartoons always have heads bigger at the bottom than the top?

Yummy. :D
Yeah in my original consultation the doctor was talking about things that can go wrong (<1% of each I guess), and one of the things was that a hole into the sinus would be created upon removal, causing mucus in the mouth and food in the nose :(

My god Marky! Never have I seen so much swelling from having Wisdom teeth removed!
My top ones never grew, but I had an operation to get the bottom ones when I was 22. The sedatives they gave me were awesome. I came right after about 4 days, I think my stitching may or may not have fallen out, though.

Sorry to get off topic, but CrazyJay.. you have an awsome signature. I actually just read it and I can't stop laughing.
As to the wisdom teeth thing.. how do you tell if they are "growing straight" or have to be removed? Short of visiting a dentist. I still have mine in but I never knew you were suppose to get them removed.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled this time last year. They wouldn't give me a general, only local, so I was totally freaked. They ended up giving me a bunch of Valium before the procedure so I'd stop freaking out.... Man, they could have pulled on my teeth with a crowbar and I wouldn't have cared at that point... Valium is your friend.

Well, you basically need an X-ray, or you wait until they start giving you problems. However, if you wait, it can be painful, and can cause more problems on removal. It is also possible though that you won't need them out.
Once the tooth's roots have fully formed, they will not grow any further. I was on the borderline - should we pull them or leave them - since my roots were about 75% formed, but the teeth were basically at the edge of breaking through.
Whether or not they will come in fine depends on how much room there is for them. My top ones had enough gum room to come in, and thus were growing straight down. However, there was not enough gum left between my bottom back molars and the back of my bottom gums, so the bottom wisdom teeth were being pushed towards my back molars, and if allowed to grow through, would push those around and cause a load of pain and problems. So, the bottoms needed to come out. And since the tops were likely to break through before root completion, they would have nothing to bite against on the bottom, and would godown into the bottom gum.
Anyways, day #2 - still swollen on the one side, teeth/lack of teeth/gum holes don't really hurt much anymore, but my jaw does from lack of being able to rest properly. Feels like it does when you've just eaten an entire bag of chips (exhausted), only 5 or 10 times worse, and lasting.
Slept quite well though. :)

Yikes!
Day #3 - pain is almost completely gone, but still taking the occasional Advil. The Tylenol 3 wasn't at all diminishing the pain, and it was giving me severe headaches, so I switched to the Advil which is much better. Apparently the swelling takes 3 days to culminate, and then recedes after that - the swelling is the most yet at the moment, on both sides. Should diminish from here though.
On the track to recovery, I'd say :)
BTW, this is great - I've spent nearly all days and all nights since Wed. afternoon in bed - and have had pants on for about 5 of the past 72 hours :D
I have a little bell to ring and Mom comes to cater to my wishes, usually for more popsicles, of which I've been eating a ton. :)
