I posted in the dsm area because i used to own a dsm and find you guys are very knowledgeable on turbos. i wondered if you guys could check out this site for me. they are starting a new turbo setup style called remote mounting. i was wondering how easy it would be to copy the idea to other cars than what they have posted. it seems a fairly simple setup and the charge like 4000$. i think it would be a great setup for daily drivers but i think it can be copied for alot less. let me know what you think! thanks! pitbullgst@hotmail.com

After looking at it myself here is what I have to say. Take a look at the systems currently availible. All of them have dispalcement of at least 5 liters or so....so running a single turbo in the back would hardly lag unless your using a turbo the size of a 747 engine. It takes exhaust velocity to spin a turbo so submissive to say I don't think our 2.0's have much of a chance for rear mount. My guess is that Integra is spooling a t-25 of which a strong breeze will make a t-25 boost...so my guess is to stay with what is proven. Keep it under the hood and the piping short and you'll come out on top for tons less money.

Cheers

this is the deal. i love the dsm's so don't thinmk i don't like the set up. my project car is a 1985 rx7 gsl. we are putting a 383 small block chevy in it. i want boost though. roots superchargers won't fit unless you feel like having a eyesore hood scoop. the engine compartment is packed with engine and you have to have a awesome cooling system to run this. turbo's would make it so much hotter if they were stuck under the hood. then i found this new setup. it makes low boost which i want and everything stays cool like i want. also i would not build my set up there way. i would mount mine in the middle around the cat to help reduce lag reducing wieght also with a side exit exhaust and i would try to route a small intercooler anyway somewhere. i only want a few pounds boost anyway. like 10 pounds or lower. if there is lag it will just help me launching without roasting tires. anyway i would like to use a mitsu turbo and was wondering what you guys thought would work? maybe a evo big 16g ported turbo? or will it need to be bigger or smaller?

Well....you might have better luck in the RX-7 forum but I am happy to help because I have been around tuners that work on V-10's. First off...don't mount your turbo near your cat converter.....they hold heat so you wouldn't have much luck or benefit mounting it there. Try mounting it behind the front tire well.....or down the center of your car somewhere....but with the 383 you still have enough cubes to put it in the rear of the car no probs. A turbo...well...since you have that many cubes you should spool a mitsu 20g very quickly..so I would not bother with a wimpy 16g. Or look on eBay under Garrett turbos...for about $500 you can get you a turbo that can make insane HP. As far as an IC goes....you already said that your engine bay is already reserved for other stuff so that makes a FMIC out of the question...again. With all those cubes and intake pull pressure you just might be the first to succesfully pull off a small rear FMIC...you'll just have to mount it under the car at an angle where it is actully getting air. In short.....a ton of custom work and piping is ahead of you. And to sum it up here is what I would do if I was you...... create a custom exhaust where it routes both side of exhaust down a single exhaust pipe...about a 3" or 4" would do. Mount the turbo in the back of the car. You could try a IC but since your gonna be running low boost and it's gonna travel from the back of the car (it will have plenty of cool down time from turbo to intake) I don't think a IC is nessacary. With that said good luck....and like I said above. I think the ol RX-7 forums might provide you with more experianced info on this subject.

Good luck, and Cheers!!

There's a reason people use short route piping on their turbos. I wouldn't want to drive a vehicle with that system. First of all, the exhaust velocity is greatest right out of the engine, so the exhaust side goes there. Second, 10+ feet of intercooler piping is a terrible idea. Increased volume means more pressure drop, inefficiency, lag, etc. The only benefit I see is a few degrees cooler air... which is a BS benefit because most turbocharged vehicles use intercoolers. a FMIC doesn't go in the engine bay, it goes in the bumper. Use one. Route your headers somewhere in the engine bay that has room for a turbo, put the turbo there, and run it to a FMIC up front, then to the throttle body. That's the way it's usually done.

i find the whole remote mounting thing a fresh idea. i mean i just like something that goes against the grain and breaks all the rules. This definatly does that. Its unheard of to locate the turbo away from the header. I can definatly see this helping some folks that have really compacted engine bays, especally since you dont have to mess with the exhaust at all except for the pipe were you mount it. iv heard theoreys on long intakes, something about a straw effect and im wondering if it would kill perfermance majorly untill you hit boost. Either way if you use a small turbo and only plan on 6-8 psi of usable boost i think this is a decent option. Maybe not on a eclipse, because theres plenty of room for a turbo in the conventional location, but on cars that are just too jammed in the engine bay to mount a turbo. Sure you would have lag like hell, but if your using this on a v6 or v8 that has decent low end torque off the line i can see it working out alright. i mean if it boost even 5 psi its going to be a big gain over not having it at all. so i say why not. I got a teo4h sittin in the garage i might try this with on my eclipse.. just to be diferent. its small enough that it might just creat boost with it this way. i dunno ill look into it a lil more and document it if i do. peace all
