how to tell a vtec apart

hi guys i just got a call from a friend and his friend is selling his civic FOR 200$. he says he thinks it is a vtec but it isn't hooked up. how do i really know it is a vtec. if there is a cam gear adjustement does it mean it is vtec. i reALLY HAVE TO KNOW ASAP cause it is goin got the scrap tomorrow.

well....it soulds like its a sohc for that kind of price. so d16z6 and d16y8 are both the engine codes, also the jdm d15b is vtec. also look for the vtec seloniod.

lol i just talked to the guy who acctually owns the car and it is a zc!!!!!!!!. after passing through like 3 ppl it ended up being a. 1.8 vtec. gee, slightly exagerated.

at first i was told it was a 1.8 vtec by some friends. as it turned out it was a zc. i got it for 125$ but i think the head gasket is blown. not to sure yet.
