The GLS model has more standard features than the GL, such as cruise control and power mirrors. Both have the same base engine, the 2.0 liter 4 cyl. with 115 hp. and 122 lbs/ft of torque. With the GLS, it is an option to get the 1.8 liter turbo 4 cyl. with 150 hp and 155 lbs/ft of torque. I just got a 96 GLS with the 2.0, my roommate has a '01 1.8t. Both jettas are completely stock, I'll probably race him soon, so if your interested, I'll let you know how much faster the 1.8t is.

The 1.8T has a serious air compression. I like the GL because you can take everything out and really race it... less options to take out when you gut it...
