Hanging Starter

A plea for advice.

Lately, my trouble free 96 Tacoma 4x4 has developed an unpleasant habit. My starter will hang (i.e., remain engaged and turning) even after the engine starts. When this happens I immediately turn the ignition off but the starter will often keep on going for 3-15 seconds; these being the longest 3-15 seconds imaginable.

Could this be the ignition switch itself or simply my starter behaving badly? It looks like a real bear getting to the starter on this thing and I'd prefer to stay nice an' clean working in the cab pulling the ignition switch instead :-) Any suggestions?

Thanks to all who reply.

Probably your starter solenoid contacts are fused. Replace them - cheap fix.
