Valves Tapping

I have a 1997 ford Escort Wagon.It has 49k miles on it.Sometimes upon acceleration the valves tap pretty loud.I took it to a shop and they suggested using a higher octane gas.Why would it do this and are there any other alternatives? It is not constant but really noticeable if you accelerate hard.
