This is a folo to my earlier post.
Could the engine quitting and the sputtering at starts be a symptom of a clogged fuel filter?

It could but the way it usally works is that it idles fine and then when you accelerate it just dies out. Which makes sense since you are trying to use more fuel and it can't flow fast enough thru the filter.
