Starter Motor died today

Yep, its been making a funny noise for a few weeks, but I just
thought it was one of those things, but it waited for me to
load up the family to head off the weekly shop (least I was at home)
& all I get is a 'orrible grating noise, I guess it's the bendix not engaging.
When I was at Nissan we never had to change one, anyone got
any tips ??? I can see its under the inlet manifold & It looks like
when its up on the ramps at work it should be straight foward, but
any input would be greatly appreciated.
btw the trade price is £225 !!!! :crying:

ooooh, sounds nasty Chris. I had mine changed when the head gasket went, cos due to the pressure, the starter motor litterally exploded. It should be a simple bolt off / bolt on best access like you say from underneath.

I've got a P11, and I had this terrible but brief whining noise coming from my starter for some time. Everyone on the forum tried to tell me it was my HVLA valve. But, it was my starter motor. I guess they go bad a lot...

Mine went about 2 weeks ago (P11 72k). It was a real bitch to replace!

I got it reconditioned for £70. Needn't have bothered, however. Apparently the electricals are strong as oxes, but the mechanicals dry out and jam. Had I known, I could have just removed it and re-greased the mechanical bits.

To remove it, face the fact that you're in for a hard graft. Need to remove the air pipe-work from the top, then get underneath and remove the inlet manifold support bracket (bit of metal running from manifold to subframe). Don't bother removing and exhaust components - you can get to it without and I ended up shearing two bolts of the tinware trying to remove! Unbolt the starter from the top and remove from underneath (disconnect the wires from underneath). Not a problem if you have ramps, but I ended up underneath the car, in the rain!

I got the job done at work on a ramp, we just removed the
inlet manifold bracket, unbolted the starter,unplugged wires & it came out no problem :)
It was only the top starter bolt that was a bit tricky, total job less
than an hour
(although I had the luxury of being under a ramp in the warm !!! :p )

I'm in a bronze (or rather bright orange) Primera GT saloon. Been meaning to get some pictures together - will probably post them to Primeraweb when I get chance.

I was the one giving comedy value to all the M4 drivers yesterday (wed). Towing a car trailer with a bright (very bright) yellow VW beetle on it - real colour clash! Word of advice to anyone stupid enough to fit a towbar to a GT - DON'T DO IT! Sorry I did now, ended up having to cut a big hole in the rear bumper...

I've got to say that I've driven many cars, but the GT never ceases to amaze me. Normally when towing, the fuel consumption drops to nothing. Instead the ECU re-adjusted itself to the extra load and gave me 34mpg with plenty of power to spare. Took a while to re-adjust, however, once I'd removed the trailer (but by-god was it quick)!

We live and learn...
