What's up Guys,
I recently picked up a 2001 VW Passat, 1.8t GLS. I love the car and it only has 28000 miles on it. Like every other car, I'm sure it has some issues that I will have to deal with. Can you all give a new member a "top 10" list of things to look out for with the car. I plan on following the maintenance schedule at 30k, and I already bought an extended warranty. I have spent many times on the side of the road, and I want to avoid getting towed at all costs. A quick concern list would be very helpful to us newbies.
I look forward to chatting with you guys...

Um....not sure I can come up with ten but here are some things to look for.
1. Control arms and tie rods
2. Timing belt change at 60k - very important
3. Sludge issues - there is a VW TSB on this - switch to synthetic oil and use the larger filter and change the oil faithfully.
4. Maintain service records - never throw any out - VW is notorious for voiding warranties for not having proof of regular oil changes.
5. If you bought the car private sale, take it into a dealer have them run the VIN for recall items. Rear wheel well liner is one that comes to mind.
That's all of the top of my head - there may be other things though.
