Forgive me for I am a car novice. I know to change oil if I have to, but that is it. My husband is currently out in parts unknown serving our country and his 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 died! It started last Monday and began idling rough. It was sluggish when starting from a red light. By the time I got to work, it stalled out. I was able to get it home, but now, it won't start at all! It appears as though it is trying to start, but then, the electrical system shuts itself down. It won't turn over. Help! Helpless in Virginia.

Most likely a backed up fuel filter or fuel pump is out.
If you have not worked on cars much, it might be a better idea to have someone take a look at it.
Before they charge you for anything:
E-mail what they say and we can help out.
You do not need: ( TELL THEM YOU DO NOT WANT THE 16 POINT INSPECTION)
1. New spark plug anything
2. Your tranmission fuild does not need to be changed or flushed
3. Oil does not need to be changed
4. Your brakes are fine
5. Your tires are fine.
6. Your shocks are fine
7. Your problem is FUEL !!! If not then SPARK.
Do you have a guy friend or something like that (Brother, Dad) or something. Have them go with you to a repair shop.
1. See if there is fuel coming out of the valve on the fuel rail
2. Do you hear the fuel pump turn on and the pump runs for a few seconds when you turn the key?
3. I am not saying you are stupid but :make sure there is fuel in the gas tank. My old truck showed 1/4 tank full when it was empty. Put 5 galllons of fuel in the tank to make sure.
Good luck and please keep us posted.
Opps I did not read about the truck shuting itself off. You mean all the power shuts down? Sounds like the security system for the truck or a bad / dead alt & battery
