Does anyone have any exerience good or bad with installing, using headers on the fuel injected single cam from 86?

Torque vs Hp / decreased torque, increased hp in ridiculous areas of powerband? Maybe a nice balance of increased useable power through out, that'd be nice.

Right now I've just got the stock exhaust manifold :( along with the rest of the stock exhaust system..blah..

Also, what's the largest diameter exhaust useable before I start to loose back pressure? I'd like to open up my exhaust, along with a free flow cat, to no more than 1 7/8" to 2" , Can I go larger than this and still produce torque out of a 2.0 n/a engine?

I have a generic short ram intake and getting a 3 angle with port & polish done right now, so intake and head flow will be greater, I'd like to match that with a free'r exhaust that'll compliment the intake and head mods.

well im not a 2nd gen, im a 4th gen w/ 5th gen engine swap lol but as far as i know the best setup pretty much for ANY car that is not FI is to use the formula 100hp=1in exhaust so basically for every 100hp you have you need 1in pipe to have the correct back pressure and free flowing capabilities to continue to have torque through out the power band (this is usually for hp up to 300) . so if you have ram air and port and polish will give you a little more power and im not sure how many hp you already have im guessing that w/ all that you may be ending up in the 150 range maybe?? i know you wont be reaching the 200 hp mark so a 1 1/2" to 2" pipe should work. Notice that this is gaged using manderal bent(keeping the same diameter all the way though the bends) exhaust piping all the way back. So if you dont get it manderal bent you need to add 1/2 to 3/4 in to this. Like i said if you're 150-180 hp using non manderal bent piping you need atleast 2" pipe and if you do use manderal bent you need 1 1/2" to 1 7/8"

Not Ram air, just a short air intake pipe with filter, that's it. I figure after the head work is done, I might come out with 125 - 130 hp maybe, that'll be about it I think..currently I'm around 115 I think :( So I guess a mandrel bent 1 7/8 is probably about the best balance then.

Any tips on header manufacturer, free flow cat and nice tone muffler? I hate the ricer sound too! I'd rather hear fingernails on a chaulkboard!

I once put a flowmaster 2 chamber on an 84 celica GT with a 2.4 liter engine, it sounded pretty good :)

I've also put a Cherry Bomp glasspack on an 80 280zx, that sounded okay..not to mention bolting on some straightpipe the a few inches longer than the length of the muffler that I cut off, with a dual baffled exhaust tip from Monza on the end, just using two U-bolts and pipe size exchanges, it sounded really cool! That would work on our engines too, but I'm not sure about passing emissions..probably not, so do it after!

SMSP is a good header if youre willing to pay upwards of atleast $700...the DC sports ceramic 4-1 header will give you more highend torque and if less expensive than SMSP. I wouldnt get anything stainless steel...go ceramic coated. Im not for sure if these companys make them for the 3rd gen but im sure they do. just do some checking around

any highflow cat is going to be better than just stock cat...you can find one pretty cheap on ebay.

lol thats alot of cars...i had 5 cars by the time i was 17 lol...93 mazda mx-3, 02 ford ranger edge, 01 mustang gt, 97 trans am, 94 probe gt, and my 93 lude...i just have my truck and my lude know tho...and mazda but its in the process of being sold
