Probably need to change the Upper Control Arm bushings, also known as the Thrust Arm bushing. Below is a website and you can see if the symptoms match yours. Note however, your car is an E38 and the one in the write-up is an E32 (older), so it may be a little different.
I did mine on my '93 740iL (E32) and it was pretty hard because it's difficult to get the bolts out.
Here's the website I mentioned: http://bmwe32.student.utwente.nl/
This site shows you how to make a special tool(s) to help with the job: http://www.nmia.com/~dgnrg/page_2.htm
I just bought new Upper Control Arms with the bushings already installed.
Here's a site for E38 stuff (lots!) Might be more data there. http://www.e38.org/
