96 jeep keyless remote

I have a 96 cherokee it has the system with the red buld on the overhead console, i have a remote that uses the radio frequency but was told that the dealer can make that remote work with my jeep. does anybody know if it will work or do i need to buy a remote that uses the the system that i have Thanks
