Stalling and no power sometimes

Hi there, 88 Ranger 2.9,
It's been acting wierd lately...
When cold and trying to accelerate it will not have any power, RPM's won't even go up and then it stalls often. I'm smelling sulfur/smoke odor - like a match. No wierd noises though. It is also stalling out of the blue sometimes, even when warmed up, the RPMs will just drop and stall - either when stopped or when clutch is in.
Any thoughts?
Also, it was overheating, but stopped after radiator flush and new cap b/c wouldn't hold pressure... Coolant might be leaking slightly still, not sure, but often smell coolant don't think these are connected...

Could it be the catalytic converter taking a crap on you? What I've heard is that the sulfer smell can mean that the converter is or has failed. Also when was your last tune up?

when it stalls, does it sound like the engine just stops trying, or does it sound like it is being restricted by something?

No tune up for a while... Some people say they think its the timing, but I don't know, not much of an expert.
Yes, it feels as it is being held back by something, and gets released sometimes... or sometimes stalls...

It could be that between a combo of clogged air filter and/or catylitic converter etc could just be dying. What shape is your air filter in?

I just replaced the fuel pump in my 94 2.9L ranger and the exhaust smells like sulfer and it now has a rough idle. I'm wondering if there is something related to the vapor recovery system. Perhaps something I messed up when I put it all back together.

Hey nika-tika, change the fuel filter on the frame FIRST...could be a lot of the problem.. only takes one bad tank of fuel to clog it, also hard on the fuel pump trying to push past a clogged filter. And galloopee, check the OX sensor, and sensor wiring circuit.should be most of that problem.. Later Mark.

Thanks for the tip. I disconnected the O2 sensor...the connector contacts were dirty and fairly corroded. I cleaned them up and I'm pretty sure this did the trick, the engine is running noticeably smoother. Thank you.
