Gas Mileage

I bought a used 2001 Camry LE V4 wth 56K miles on it. In city I get about 20 mpg. Is that standard? I had heard Camry's give lot more mileage. If 20 mpg city is not ok then what could be wrong? Tire pressures look good. I use regular gas. Highway mileage on this is about 30 mpg.
Thanks.

It depends if you live around alot of hills and if you have a heavy accelerater foot. This is about right for me as I live in Pittsburgh.(Alot of hills).

I do live in a city with lots of ups and downs: Austin, TX. And I do have a heavy foot. But I have to with the 2.2 litre V4 engine.
What mileage do others get?

camryle2001,

I have a 98 XLE with the 2.2 and live in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I get around 22. If I'm doing mostly short trip driving in the Winter, I can get as low as 18-19. On the road I average around 31-32. If I remember correctly, the EPA for your car when new was 23 and 31 highway, so your mileage figures look a bit low.

As far as things that can effect mileage, I would start with checking the air filter. Next I would inspect the output of the 2 oxygen sensors and the coolant temp sensor. If these are off a bit, they can cause the car to run a bit rich and hence decrease fuel mileage. To check the later 2 items you would need a service manual and a digital volt/ohmeter.

Your mileage could be about right for your type of driving. Your car is pretty common. I would simply ask people you see in parking lots with Camrys of your generation what engine they have and what mileage they get.
