No power to starter?

Well, I got stranded at work last night since when I went to start up my '99 GLS, there was nothing. Battery is strong, just no power to the starter. Had it towed to a local shop and they looked at it today. They said they got it started intermittently but at times, they were getting no juice to the starter. They said they wouldn't be able to do anything with it and that I have to get it to a VW dealership since it is beyond what they are able to fix. SO, before I pay for another tow, does anyone know what this might be or is it a common on the Jetta?? I have about 103k miles on it. Thanks!

Eric
