tahoe abs

I have a Tahoe 1999 with a ABS problem. When the car is driven with a speed between 4and 7 miles the ABS activates when i activate the break pedal. If the speed is lover than 4 miles or higher than 7 miles it works perfect. Can anybody help me?

Most likely it is a wheel speed sensor. Should be a relatively easy fix after diagnosis.

Without knowing the code causing the light, it is only a guessing game. But my first guess would also be the speed sensor on one of the wheels. But that is only a guess. You would need to get the code, with a reader and go from there. It should tell you rather specifically what it is. The speed sensors are gear driven off the hub at each wheel. They are exposed to the elements and can fail easily. Sometimes they will fail completely usually causing the warning light. But sometimes they will just read incorrectly and send false info to the ABS system resulting in symptoms like Cbdata is experiencing.

I had the same low speed abs engagement problem. I ended up replacing the right front bearing/hub assembly with the sensor and that corrected it. Advance auto parts didn't show the sensor by itself. The worse part of the job was getting the bolts loose that hold in the hub assembly.

Does anyone know where the sensor mounting area is located? I had the rotors off the other day, but could not see any wires or sensors. My ABS has the same 3-7 mph activation problem.

You really have to look for it.. I found that following the wire works best. It's (on mine) above the cv joint not far from the caliper and held in by1 bolt. Hope this helps.

I have a 99 Tahoe doing the same thing. Co-woker has a 2002 Z71 Silverado, same prob. He paid $200 to have them cleaned, which didn't fix the problem, then another $400 to replace. A recall has been issued on this but only on vehicles in Canada.

18foot, did you have to disconnect any ball joints when replacing. Looking over the manual, it seems as though you have 4 bolts holding it on and then after removing those, then pull off bearing assembly with a puller. Do you then remove the axle nut and swich out parts? Think am going to go for it and try the replacement. thks.
