cooling fan

I have a 87 cavalier 2.8. My problem is the cooling fan for the radiator runs when the Engine turns off and drains the battery dead. As soon as you start the car the fan does not run and when you shut the car off right away the fan will kick on and drain the battery to nothing. This is my girlfriends car and trying to get it going. Most resent I replaced the fuel pump and filter that was big bucks at the shop. Any help please, I am trying to get it going for her and I am running out of cash. Battery is brand new, this problem started after we got the car back from the shop and the problem was not there. I changed the oil and thought I had some transmittion oil leaking under pan so placed a tub plastic container underbody to see how much. My goofy lady desideded to pull the car out and turn it around in the driveway. The next day battery was drained. She said she jumped it and it ran but when shut off the fan was running 24/7. She said she jumped up and down on the hood and the fan quit. I crawled under and checked the connection to the fan and think it may have shorted from the plastic tub so I secured it tight and the fan just would run 24/7. Where abouts is the location of the motor relay for the 87 and location of the temp sensor. I hope my description is good enough. I am new to this forum so could you forward any info to [email protected] I am 12 hour shifts and do not have much time at home so am trying to research the best I can here at work. Thank you everyone for your input. I will wait for any help. And check forum as well , I am Netstile

Easy fix.
The sensor is right next to the thermostat housing where the top hose attaches to to motor. Replacment cost is $5 or so.

The relay is mounted on the fender next to the battery. This is where your problem is. The temp sensor goes through the ignition switch but the relay has power at all times on this car. Replacement cost is about $10-15. Good Luck.

Hello, thanks for the location of the relay. 2 of the wires were fried and so I rebuilt the plug and replaced the relay. Now the fan is off when the car is off. I let it idle for amout 15 minutes, seemed to get hot and figured the fan should have kicked in, so I turned off the car worried it would cause damage. Should of I waited longer??? What should I do next, I looked in the blue prints of my chilton and there is a fusable link, would it be wise to start to take apart the rap hoses and search for this link??? Does anyone no how far or the location of the link??? Or should I replace the temp sensor, I see were the top hose goes into the motor but do not see any wires there???? It just seemed to me the darn fan should have kicked in,, Does anyone have any temp specs they could lay down so I can make a better judgement call on the fan turning on. Thanks again for any help. Thank you!!!!!
