I've seen well over 500 rwhp on the stock engine.

i heard someone got 765 rwhp.

... his thread title reads "with stock internals" ... I do not know of anyone doing that with stick internals. There are a few people that have made over 700 rwhp ... but not with OEM insides :D

I heard it was stock internals... hearing and seeing are two things though. either way it'll kick a WRX engine hahaha

does one of the gens handle more then another ?

756rwhp stock rods.
... and the engine was bored out with over sized pistons (.020 over pistons).
That is not what I would call "stock internals."
90gts, the later generations 96+ in Japan had a slightly different block desing and it is hypothesized that it could handle the stress better than the early engines. Above 700 rwhp the OEM block on the early years tends to crack.

Mmmm Ok Not Stock Internal... But Shows You The Rods Are Up For It!

stock rods and crank, everything held up but the block. it cracked between 2 cylinders. not sure if the stock pistons would be up to it.

Hmm, in a related question:
How much HP would you say would be safe to run until opening up the motor? (exclude cams)

id say 400 for a street car, 5XX if you dont use it so much... GUESSING

Well I am safely at 351 rwhp without opening the engine. Cams are a great way to get significant power, safely.
I'm sure with the proper set up (big turbo, proper tuning) you could get well over 400 rwhp without opening the engine ... but bigger turbos will love cams. :)

Would you recommend putting new cams on a relativly stock engine to get hp gain or is that putting the cart before the horse. (sorry for the old school saying.
If it would be worth it what cams do you recommend. and is it labor intensive.

If you have not upgraded your turbo ... there is no point in doing cams.
Cam wills make your engine breathe better ... before you can see true benefits of that, the rest of the system needs to be breathing better (intake, exhuast, turbo, intercooler) ... and you need to have the fuel & engine management to handle that added power.

and the cycle begins! you have to do this for this, and than this for that, so on and so forth. its a long vicious cycle

Jeff do you have cams? Or is that not considered unopened

1QUICK2, yep ... it is all about building a system.
Im JDM Yo, I do not have cams yet. I will be doing cams, 850 cc injectors, Wolfkatz fuel rail and Nemesis this winter.
As far as I am concerned "unopened" technically means the head and block have not been taken away from each other to have any work done. To install cams, you are popping off the valve cover and dropping some cams in. That does not seem like major surgery to me.
I am sure 98% of the racing world will consider cams an internal mod and they are probably right since it is not exactly "bolt" an go.
That's the fun part about words and language, "we"" all have our own definitions.

4 times ... 11.73, 11.74, 11.78 and 11.78.
I think I have close to 10 passes in the 11s now.
If you check out my Web site I have almost all of my 110+ slips on the track history and a complete mod list.
I just turned 200,000 miles as well :)

ok so if you change the stock pistons to forged pistons would you HAVE to change the cam as well? and what about the rods would it be safe to say that those need to be changed also?
JekylandHyde

People have done 600+ rwhp on the OEM rods.
If you go with better pistons, you do not have to change the cams. One has nothing to do with the other.
Upgraded pistons will make your engine stronger.
Upgraded cams will give you more power.

Oem Rods Are Obviously Tuff.
I'd Consider A Few Things.
1) While The Engine Is Open... Should You Do The Rods To Save Opening It Later?
2) Ceramic Coating The Pistons - Worth Doing?
3) When I Get My New Engine I'm Not Sure If I Want To Stroke It Or Not.

ok... if i wanted to hit a higher boost off of my turbo then the pistons would be a good thing to change. right? and if i wanted even more power then i could add a cam as well....what exactly are "OEM" rods?

OEM = original equipment manufcaturer.
OEM is a short hand for the original Toyota parts.
What turbo do you have? .... pistons are not really an issue unless you are going far beyond 350 rwhp.

ok that makes sense...im actually talking about a mk1 with an after market hks turbo. i just really don't want to blow the motor, and i don't know what the 4age can handle.
