sending unit?

I just bought a used 96 1500 ex cab and all is fine except the fuel gauge is wacky. At 1/2 tank it goes to empty and will stall like you're out of fuel. Could it be the sending unit and is it seperate from the fuel pump ?
and can it be done without dropping the tank? thx

I'm not sure, but if the procedure to get to the sending unit is the same as the procedure to get to the pump (dropping the tank) the only other way to get to it would be to remove the bed of the truck.

I replaced the fuel pump and she runs like a bandit now thx for the advice
