1988 ranger tranny? which one?

My father needs to put a new transmission in his 1988 Ford Ranger. VIN # 1FTBR10T0JUB14170. His local 'shop' can't tell or haven't looked hard enough. They say it's either a Mazda or Mitusubishi brand. Are there any alternatives?

TIA,

Ed S

It should tell right in the Ranger Owners Manual SPECIFICATIONS Section what type of Transmission it is. It is probably an A4LD. The questions about the Mazda or Mitszubishi probably refer to the VALUE BODY type.

thanks for the info, but I think the owners manual is long gone. I was hoping to get tranny code from the VIN. Is there another place to look? Will it be obvious if I'm under the truck? Tags?

Thanks,
Ed S

I have a link you would want to see, but I can't post it here. PM me if you want it, it has detailed information about Ranger transmissions.

Is it an auto or manual?

From what it appears you have a stick?

I'd hate to say this but, If they can't determine which transmission is suppose to go back into the Ranger, maybe your dad needs a new "shop".

This is all I could find with your VIN. If it's an auto, it's an A4LD. It it's auto then watch the shift solenoids. They switched from 1 solenoid to 2 solenoids in Mid-1988.
