Cruising speeds

Calling all 3rd gen owners, I got a question for you guys. In your last gear crusing at 3K rpms what is your speed? I ask cuz I went to get my tranny checked out cuz it doesn't seem to be getting in its last gear, but the mechanic drove my car and said it's fine it's just late, but it doesn't seem to change and when im cruising at 3K rpm I'm only driving at 60mph. It's auto btw, yea yea i know, i'll have it changed later, right now im working on making everything work properly and I'm in the proccess of replacing the suspension.

my car is year 91
probably 4th or 5th generation
GTS 2.2
cruzing at 3k mine would show 60-65 mph
(62.5 i would say)
i think its a little bit high

wait you're telling me the autos were 3 speeds? Damn, no wonder... I was going crazy trying to figure it out. What's the Overdrive for?

Thanks for you're info guys!

overdrive is a gear in the syncromesh (the last gear) its kinda like 5th (or 6th in a 6 speed) and all it is, a gas saving gear

hmm... wonder if my O/D works or not either way you say that the autos are 3 speeds? I just want to verify it with you before i start blabing off to someone and later to find out you ment something different, so my appoligies if I sound too much like a noob.

its probably 3 speed w overdrive, thats why u might think its 4 speed auto...it could b 4 speed auto w/o overdrive .... lemme find out from a friend what it is

thanks. It gives me even more insentive to make the car a 5 speed or 6 speed. damn gas prices...

if u wanna save gas then dont drive :)

lol, that's kinda hard when my job is 15 miles away by freeway and my girl friend dorms 40 miles away by freeway

and you got to admit autos suck and a 3 speed? That has to be the worst.

actually 3 speed or 6 speed its all the same...relativly....i could make my ST a 4 speed and it would be better than a 6 speed

SigmaProjects

you sure about that? I mean yea you can make a 4 speed better, but you can make a 5 speed even better and a 6 speed compared to a 3 speed is way different. Explain more why you said a 3 speed and a 6 speed is the same to you. I obviously know that you know the general differences, but what type of gear ratios are you trying to perpose?

91 Celica St

its all about gear ratio's why do u think cars back i nteh day were only 3 speed? not enough power to have them a 6 speed

SigmaProjects
11-16-2004, 03:09 PM
but say if im making 180hp at the wheels don't you think a 5 or 6 speed would be much much better?

91 Celica St
11-16-2004, 03:13 PM
its all about gear ratios...figure out what ratios would be the best, id go with a 5 speed, 6 can be trickey when it comes to shifting

SigmaProjects

other than another gear what makes a 6 speed more tricky? The main reason i would get a 6 speed is if i decide to get the 3SGE w/ tranny from a RS200. But of course that is far away in the future (I understand the complications, but I'll have pros do the swap), but I'd like to know more about what you are saying. I understand about gear ratios, but you can't compare the 3 speed autos with the 5 speeds for the same year. Even the 5 speed and 6 speed of the new GTS there is a noticable difference even in gas milage.

I have a 2002 GT with a 5 speed, at 3000 Rpm's I am going 62.5 mhp, Just thought you would like to know....

91 Celica St
11-17-2004, 11:19 AM
like i said its all about power, in a stock 100 Hp car like mine it is way better to have a 5 speed, back in the day when cars were 100 Hp in a 4000 car they were 3 speeds because they had to be...keep in mind the more gears the more power loss as well

roccamo, thanks for the info.

91 celica st, yea i agree with a car with 100hp, but like i said would you still recommend a 3 speed for an engine that has around 180-190 hp that is peaking over 6K rpm?

91 Celica St
11-19-2004, 11:10 AM
no... a 5 speed

hey buddy your auto is a 3 speed w/ OD i have an '83 celica parts car thats auto and it a 3 speed w/ OD. if you end up needing a tranny and can't find one you can HAVE (for free) the one out my parts car i don't need it 'cause my car is a 5 speed. by the way 3 speeds suck my wifes car has only three gears and the car just sucks but its only used to and from work (about 6 miles to and from), besides gas here is only $1.72 a gallon. the lower the gear ratio the better the acceleration the higher the gear ratio is the higher your top speed will be.

91 Celica St
11-22-2004, 11:46 AM
there you go, the only reason to have a 3spped car is for a car with low Hp #'s becuase acceleration is better with 5 or 6 speed cuz the close ratios within the syncromesh
