How many miles to a tank?

Just wondering how many miles I should be getting to the tank for my 96' lantra wagon. Recently, the gas has been registering pretty strangly, and i've only been getting about 150 miles for about 7 gallons of gas. The strange part is that the gas meter says there is much less than a 1/4 tank, and is nearly empty.

My average fuel performance on my Elantra 1997 Authomatic is
18 to 20 miles per gallon.
That is the expected real performance.
Don't break your brain, thinking it could be better.
My car is 80K miles and very well controled.

I have a 98 wagon auto and I get very different mileage with different types of driving. On the highway I got 47mpg/ canadian-37-38 us and I get about 33 canadian and 26 US short trips. Its the first vehicle I have had that is that different.

I get about 340 miles to a tank normally as well. Although I've gotten as much as 430 miles to a tank as well...but on long distance drives.

My ‘05 has a fuel computer; don’t know if this is a new feature. Anyway, it reports about 30 mpg and 400 miles per tank... about half of it on freeway, all of it with no regard for fuel conservation. Sure beats the 17 mpg medium-octane of my beloved old Cherokee.

My 2001 model gets me btwn 29 mpg (local) and 34 mpg (hwy). Lowest per tank I got was 380 miles. That was with #2 spark plug misfiring at the time (I have a long story about that too). Your 20 mpg sounds a bit suspicious for 2005 standards, however, your car was made 1995 and back then 20 mpg could be normal.
