gear shift linkage or tranny?!?!?!?!?

Ive got a 1991 MGM that was running like a champ, I recently drove it from NY to FL with no problems. Before this trip I got a tune-up, changed all the filters, sparkplugs and wires, and got the steering column fixed. About a week ago the car started stalling out at redlights. If I gave it a minute it would start back up no problem. Id say it happened 10times in a week. My uncle told me it was probally a dirty fuel injector so I used some cleaner. It thought it worked. But yesterday I went to drive the car and it doesnt want to go anywhere. I can shift into R and everything seems fine but when i put it in D the engine sounds like im going 50 but i hardly go anywhere. I was thinking that maybe when they fixed the steering column they messed up the shift linkage or something. The reason I got the steer column fixed was because I had to shift to 1 to put it in D, and N to put it in R, and P didnt work at all. So I know they had to mess with the shifting to fix it. I dont think its the tranny because prior to yesterday it always shifted smoothly, no slipping or grabbing. Please does anyone know what happen to my car???

Your indicator may be off or broken. For now, just shift by feel, the number of clicks from park to drive, etc. Since the steering column was "fixed", I'm thinking that something wasn't hooked up just right. I'd go back to where you had the work done and let them know it needs to be adjusted - for free.

That problem was the reason I had them fix the steering column not the problem Im currently having. Currently when i shift into D the car goes like 1mph and the engine sounds like its going 50mph. But it is in D because I can drive very slowy. I brought it to the dealship today but they wanted like 600 just to tell me what was wrong. Funny thing is i was going down a hill and got up to around 30mph and the car started to drive normal again like it kicked into gear but as soon as i slowed down again it was messed up again. I would love to take it back to the garage I had work on it but thats in NY and I drove to FL because I was moving. Also what indicator are u talking about and is there any way for me to check this out? thx for the reply

Sorry I didn't read the initial post thoroughly enough. From your description I'd think your fluid level may be low. When trans fluid isn't available, the trans might not engage from a start -- or in certain gears, as fluid is not getting somewhere. It's usually caused by low fluid, but could be a pump or other problem also.

If you've already made sure your level is correct, then I'm sad to say you may very well have a more serious problem, and are looking @ a new tranny or a rebuild.

Wouldn't take it to the dealer, $600 to diagnose? That's crap. If the fluid level has been ok through all this, I'd say to find a reputable trans shop and have it rebuilt. (Unless you're up to it, rebuild kit less than $200)
