The Chilton book says to remove inspection cover on bottom of tranny, I don't see one. It is not like a TH350, that has the cover to see the flexplate, converter, etc. The plate seems to be on the front side, next to the starter. How would you turn the flexplate to remove the converter bolts? Anyone took out their tranny? Mine is a '98, 2.2 4 banger, automatic. Thanks for the help.

remove the starter and turn the flexplate with a big heavy duty screw driver or somthing similar. dont mess up the teeth on the flexplate with the srewdriver.

I use visegrips and clamp them onto the plate itself ... not the teeth. Then just pull the visegrips along till you get to the next bolt. The vise grips will also jamb against the transmission to loosen the bolts.

If I've got a friend close by I just get them to turn the motor over with a socket on the front crankshaft bolt. When loosening off the flex plate bolts I've just used the socket extension jam on the side of the transmission. Of course air tools make the job easy if your lucky enough to own or borrow them
