Hi .. in my friends 1999 300M The starter will sometimes just make a click sound and do nothing .. sometimes many times in a row until it finally will start. I was thinking that the solinoid is going out but I don't know I am used to dealing with old cars not new ones ... any help would be real nice

thank you!

they still have a solinoid, you should have 12v from the battery to the solinoid on a thick wire, turn the key and 12v is supplied to the solinoid via a thin wire, the sol picks and 12v is passed to the starter, the clicking should be the sol picking, check for loose or dirty connections, get a volt meter and check for voltage

Is the solinoid connected directly to the positive cable that runs from the battery, or is it connected some other way?

yes, it is connected directly from the battery.
