1992 3.8L No spark!! Two years ago I repaired a wire in the steering colum because the security light keep coming on and the engine wouldn't start. I don't remember if it wouldn't crank or just wouldn't start. It's my mother-in-laws' car and my step daughter was driving it when it stalled and wouldn't restart. It had stalled several times the day before but restarted every time. The security light has been on for several weeks maybe a month, but until this last time the engine has started. If the security system failed during operation is there a "limp" time. Or would it die right away? An auto parts store worker told me to measure the resistance of the resistor in the key and put that value resistor in the wires for the security system that come out of the steering colum. When I tested the resistor in the keys, I measured it using several differant scales on the meter, I got 3 ohms on the X1 scale, 11 ohms on the X10 scale, 90 ohms on the X100 scale. the on board battery test says that the batteries in the tester are good and the meter will zero on all scales. What do you think?

Where did you check for the spark, at the plugs or at the coils? I would test to see if the spark signal even gets to the coils, as that signal comes directly from the computer.
If the security system fails, I would imagine that it should die immediatly, but I am only familiar with the Pass Key III system. The repaired wire might need to be checked again. If you have a wiring diagram handy, use it.

:grinno: I disconnected the (-) neg cable from the battery, removed the air bag, steering wheel, steering wheel lock plate, turn signal switch arm, turn signal switch. Underneath all that I found the two wires for the security switch, both were severed. I removed the key switch lock bolt, turned the key to the off position and pulled the key cylinder out. The switch is in the part of the key cylinder that turns every time you turn the key. The wires for the switch drag and rub every time you turn the key. I added some wire to the switch, I had to make the solder and shrink tube as small as posible there's not a lot of room in the wireway.
I rerouted the longer wires through the turnsignal switch mount bolt cavity. The engine started as soon as I turned the key, the security light went out. I put it back together. The only hitch was while removeing the air bag/horn switch I dropped it and pulled the plastic retainer tit off the horn wire connector, I wrapped it with tape to fit the hole.

I think the security system diabled the spark after so many days of operation in a "limp mode".
