MAS combs

honeycombs......well, I've heard of ppl with ALL the honeycombs removed, and I've heard of people just taking the big bottom one out on the 2G's. So yesterday we just decided to pull out all the honeycombs for a bit and see what happens. Nothing really happened except for the idle being a little lower, and the car feeling like its sucking in more air, which it is. When I took out the top honeycomb a while ago, my friend, stupidy, crushed it right there saying "you wont need this". Needless to say I was pissed, but since it didnt affect my performance, I'm alright with it. Of course I have had this "no honeycomb" for like 6 hours now, and I know that I need to put some back in. I realize that this was some stupid shit to even think about by me, however, I need to know which ones I should put back. I always heard that the top one should be kept in, so i might have to buy a used MAS for $80 or so, or put some back in. Need some help ASAP cause I'm pretty concerned about this...
Thanks
Thanks

I have to assume you have a 2g. NEVER modify the MAS on a 2g, that's a 1g trick to remove honeycombs.
I would try to find a stock 2g MAS at a junkyard.

There should be plenty around, try the trader. With everyone going to GM MAFs they are around.
I've spent a good bit of time experimenting with the 2g MAS. All it does is throw off the calibration. You can see it in the AFC values required to compensate. If I Remember correctly with the lower HC out I had to set it to 30, 10, 2, 0,0,0,0, NO added airflow up top.
Now, there is one time when it makes sense to hack the MAS. Same reason you do it on 1Gs. When you have reached its flow limits. You can get up to 57 lbs/min capacity on the sensor hacked, compared to 49-50 lbs of the stock sensor. 1G is way lower. 50 lbs/min is about 500 HP, so theres very little need to do this on 2G sensors. ;)
If you had just pulled the lower you oculd compensate for it easy enough. But more than that and you might as well keep looking for a new one. :)

Problem Solved. Got all the parts and honeycombs and such back together from various places. the two side pieces have a little dent in each, but nothing a little tweaser work cant fix, and the big center piece is in perfect condition. The bottom piece is still gone forever...but it should be alright for now. Its the smallest piece thats gone, so I'm not that unhappy about it. Should be alright for now, and wont be a problem, as I am getting a AFC or probably a DSMlink in the near future. Thanks for the help guys  .

i was told by RRE that it is fully cool to take out all the honeycombs. i haven't done it yet and they still owe me a round fo tuning too... it may get done at that point... we will see...

Until your flowing 49-50 lbs/min there is no point. Trust me, I have found the limits of the sensor myself ;) I dont know what "fully cool" is, but I like my MAS to report the proper amount of airflow, and in a fashion that the ECU can understand.

yea, im just gonne get someones maf off of e-bay for like $20 or something. As cheap as I can go, cause f-the maf, all i need is the honeycomb. I agree with 95 GSXracer, I like things functioning like they are supposed to. , I'm gonna get things back to normal and then take it slow...
