I have a 1999 Intrepid with a A606/42LE transmission. I took it in for a transmission fluid change. The mechanic put in Dexron with an additive and the car requires ATF4. The additive is suppose to convert Dexron to ATF3 or 4. Shortly after, the car would not shift into second gear. The mechanic said they did nothing wrong. A second opinion said I needed a new transmission. Anyone have any info or experiences with Dexron and additives causing transmission failure?

Unfortunately, if you went to a mom & pop shop, they don't know that all Chrysler transmissions require Mopar ATF +4, a mistake that we have realized at my shop. What you need to do is go back to a certified Chrysler dealership and have them do a transmission flush. It'll cost you around $110 bucks. I have the TSB here for you:

DISCUSSION:

A new transmission fluid (ATF+4(R) - Type 9602) has been developed and is being used as factory fill for all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions. Until now, vehicles originally filled with ATF+2 or ATF+3 were to be serviced with ATF+3. Effective immediately, it is recommended that all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions except for 1999 and earlier minivans be serviced with ATF+4(R). ATF+3 should continue to be used for 1999 and earlier minivans because of the potential for torque converter shudder during break in. For all other applications the ATF+4(R) fluid offers significant benefits as outlined below.
NOTE :ATF+4(R) MUST ALWAYS BE USED IN VEHICLES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY FILLED WITH ATF+4(R).

NOTE :SERVICE INTERVALS DO NOT CHANGE. THE SERVICE INTERVAL CURRENTLY IN EFFECT FOR A GIVEN VEHICLE SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE FOLLOWED.

NOTE :ATF+4(R) IS COMPATIBLE WITH ATF+3 AND CAN BE USED TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT CURRENTLY HAVE ATF+2 OR ATF+3. DO NOT USE ATF+2 OR ATF+3 TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT HAVE ATF+4(R) FLUID.

FLUID COLOR

Mopar ATF+4(R) is a World Class Fluid having exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4°R is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not support a fluid change.

If you want to print this out and show it to the people who serviced your transmission, you can. Will they honor a refund, I don't know but they messed up and in honor and ethics, I would consume the bill for my customers because of one word, CSI (customer service index). We want to keep our customers happy and even if we have to absorb a high bill, as long as we don't lose to much overhang in the process.

The dexron with the additive is a big no no, I would say that the shop is 100% liable for repair or replacement. Get as much written proof of this and show them and be prepared to take it to court if necessary.

I know that Chrysler says to use ATF+4 in them, but I've never lost one from using Dexron3. There is nothing in Dexron3 (Or missing from for that matter) that will make a transmission fail in that short of order.
Basically, the friction modifiers and detergent package is different, but not as much as they want you to think.

In my experience, most of the transmissions that fail shortly after a service had problems to begin with. Not many people change the trans fluid as often as they should, with some going twice the reccomended interval. Let's get real here, 100,000 miles for the first fluid change???? Leave it alone, it will last longer than fresh fluid and filter, whether it's Dexron or ATF+.... I'm willing to bet you would've had problems even if they put the ATF+4 in it.

Now, with that said, I do agree that the proper fluid should be used, I just don't believe that not using it has caused all the failures that have been claimed.

BTW....I have Dexron3 in my 98 trep with no problems whatsoever, and it's been in there for at least 8,000 miles.
