hi guys, have a few questions and i need to know kinda fast b4 things start rusting on me. ok first off. i took the drivers side door off the car today to prep for painting. OMG they are heavy. i am going to be painting the doors, trunk lid, fenders, spoiler, just about everything that can come off this weekend. in the door jams of the door( the inside you dont see unless the door is open) there is clear coat over the paint. seems like the clear has worn off the outer paint. but still on the inside. im sanding it down and it like guwwy as its coming off. not like dust. can i just ruff up the surface and primer over that, or do i have to take off all the clear and go to metel. its not really a big deal,(inside rememeber) but im sanding and when it goes through everything to the steel of the door, it exposes the metel that can rust. maybe im just over reacting on this. what would you guys do. 2nd, is there a trick on get the door handles off. do i have to go through the inside or what. 3rd, the weather striping for the window. you know the piece that the window slids through on the top of the door. i see screws holding it in, but the window is over that and if i roll up the window or roll it down, i still cant get to them. i need new b/c is rotted. but how do i het the screws out. the inside of the door down come apart b/c of factory spot welds and all molded together. please help if you can. thanks a lot, sorry so long

door handles - two 10mm screw bolts on either side of the handle on the inside of the door
are you talkin about the rubber molding that runs along the outside of the door that keeps water from running into the door? If you roll your window all the way down, then loosen the two window adjustment clamps right on top of the door (if you have the door panel and trim off) Pull the window all the way in and that should give you enough room to get a small ratchet in there for most of them.. use a small wrench to get the corner ones..
For your first question, as long as there is no body work to be done, or suspected rust under the paint, you shouldnt be taking it down to the metal anyway.. IMO the only time you should be taking paint right down to the metal is if theres old bondo, bodywork to be done, or rust to get rid of..
use a heavier grit sandpaper to get that clear off.. then rough up the paint with a 600grit sandpaper before primering

i now see the bolts in the inside for the handle. its a pain in the ass b/c you have yo reach your arm all the way from the bottem to the top inside the door. the bolts are under teh glass either way. i am just going to tape the handle and the key holes up b4 paint. as for the weather strip, yes the part on the top to stop wather from coming in. even with the window all the way down, the glass is still tight on the screw heads. ill see about what you said, maybe i can work it. rememeber this is a 2nd gen camaro. its different then the newer ones. as for teh paint, im just going to get some 120 grit, get the clear ruffed up some and sand with 180. that will be fine i beleive b4 primer, the primer will fill in all the small screches so. where i bondo, thats should be all metal? or just down to the paint. i am feathering it into the paint to smooth it out. thats fine. im not worried about that. some little rust spot under the paint. but ill take them down enough to stop it and have the primer seal it off.

Ive never actually seen the inside of a 2nd gen door.. I was usin a 3rd gen as a guide.. figured they'd be similar...
Cant you roll the window up?? or why dont you take the glass out? its a 15 minute job

the glass is still in the way when up. the glass is under the inner skin. its molded and factory welded. you cant take it apart. i dont know what you do it it breaks. maybe unbolt it and slid through the top. i dont know. tomorrow ill take a pic and post it, its dark now, and getting late, i have tomorrow off so ill get that done early. then you can see what im talking about about

not big on 2nd gen but im sure you can take the glass out..
the glass should have white plastic wheels fastened to it.. the wheels are in steel tracks
on the tracks, there should be stops at the end.. if you pull those stops out, you can slide the wheels right off the tracks..
The glass should then be able to be manouvered out the top of the door..
