ok damnit.

Boogie---------- nice desktops- XP is pretty dern cool...

why can't i find a skin for windows 2000 that'll make it look a wee bit sexier????

b-b00gie
02-22-2002, 12:30 AM
You can!

Search for "windowblinds" on google.com and install it. Then hit up http://www.skinz.org for some WindowBlinds skins. Its in the 3rd category called "GUI Changers".

Skinz.org only has the skins. You have to find the WindowBlinds app somewhere else. Its easy to find... I'm just too lazy right now! :D

I'd have to say this is the best Windows OS yet. I didnt care for the looks at first but now I really like it. It's extremely stable, at least from my experience with it. It the only machine I'm running Windows on at home now... the others are running MacOS and FreeBSD but I rarely use them anymore because running Windows for personal uses is so much easier.

Linux is just crap. Its not user friendly at all so I dont see why people insist its good for a home user. It's definately the lowest grade server platform. Real UNIX OS's and NT far outperform it. The only place I can see running Linux is in a networked business running UNIX. It's a stable platform for running applications, but unless you have an administrator configuring it the average Joe will not be too happy with it.

BSD (UNIX) is probably the most stable and secure server OS, not to mention the fastest. Solaris and NT are close behind.

MacOS I really like but they really need to sort out the stability issues. Its a damn shame because the Mac PPC's are so great yet the OS is to buggy to put it to full use.

That is total BS. I've been using Linux on my desktop for the last two years. I'll admit grandma would have a very hard time using it. But there is no way I'll be Bill's little bitch like the other 90% of the world. There are select few things I can't do with Linux but that is because of MS proprietary formats and OS lock in. Nothing to do with Linux and EVERYTHING to do with MS bully tactics. Linux definatly takes a more knowledgeable user and I'm proud of that. I can't stand working in Windows now. I feel like going from working on a real car to playing with tonka trucks.

I don't see how this makes it a bad server platform. There are plenty of business running Linux for their back office applications. Linux is a very stable server. Performance is not a big issue, I'd like to know where you got that idea? Seriously if you have a study I can look at I'd like to see it. Scalability on SMP boards is not the greatest right now, but will get better with SUN and IBM on board. There have been some wild successes with 1000+ node clustering. However, Linux gets better everyday. It must be crap becuase SUN and IBM are all concentrating on Linux now as opposed to their own UNIX varients. Problem with the 'real' *nix systems is that they are very expensive. The problem with Windows is that they are really not all that stable for mission critical applications and they've gained their desktop advantage unfairly.

It doesn't take too much to lock down a Linux server. Anyhow I'd put NT at the VERY bottom of the security list. MS isn't to interested in providing timely, available security updates. They'd just rather bundle everything up into a new version and sell it to you.

I've never tried BSD, something that's alsways been at the back of my mind. I've got a shit load of new space on this machine now so I might give it a shot.

User friendly-ness doesnt stop at the desktop. I'd like to see the average person go out and buy a network card, upgraded video card, modem and configure it on a Linux platform. I'd like to see the average person upgrade a hard drive, troubleshoot a boot error, configure and build a kernel, configure service files, etc...

I understand that *you* and I and other techie people know how to do these things, but most would not and documentation isnt exactly geared towards the newbie. Linux's main purpose is in a desktop UNIX environment.

Linux is a slower OS because its not even a *real* OS, but you know that. Linux can keep up with serving back office apps, but I know you will not honestly tell me you can count on it for mission critical apps. I work in the securities field (stock market) which is dubbed the most mission critical field next to the military. You will never see a Linux app server. In fact you are NOT allowed to run Linux for any market making and order processing.

NT is used just as much for mission critical apps as Solaris or other Unix OS's. We run 50/50 NT/Solaris with no issues here (Merrill Lynch) for both server and workstation for our trading operations. Believe me if either was unstable or undependable it would not be used. Less than a minute downtime can cost over $1,000,000 in losses easily. All of our back office is NT (in case you're wondering...)

Compare a fresh install of Linux vs a fresh install of XP. Who's got more vulnerable services running? Linux.

Is that a joke? Jason, I'm glad you dont have a security related job like I do! Do you even subscribe to Bugtraq?

There is a new Unix or Linux exploit released at *least* once a week. How often do you see a new Microsoft vulnerability? Once every 3 months? 4 months? 6 months?

Please list for me how many security vulnerabilities were released in 2001 for NT/2000? You can count them on your fingers. How many Unix and Linux vulnerabilities were there? Triple? Quadruple? Even *Cisco* had more vulnerabilities than NT/2000 and Cisco IOS serves only one minute purpose; routing.

There has only been a few cases EVER where MS has taken longer than 1 day to release a patch. How is that not timely? For the most part, every patch MS puts out the patches *before* you even hear of the exploit. They had about 40 something patches released last year, but only 3 published vulnerabilities and the patches for those were released the same day.

Go for FreeBSD or OpenBSD.... NetBSD is the bastard child.

BTW... I take back the "crap" comment. I'm not a total MS loving Linux bashing person at all. I just think Linux has a very small role and will never be up to par with Windows or a real UNIX OS. I've always enjoyed getting to know the UNIX OS and its fun to learn and use something other than an MS OS, but to say that you would never run or try XP just because of MS politics, is a little silly.

XP is a very good OS. :)

Hope you didnt take the Linux comments too personally and take my words for what they're worth...

for those of you who don't know how to take a screenshot:

look on your keyboards- on the right half of it on the top- there should be a key that says:

PrtSc <<< pressing it will copy WHATEVER you see on your screen right at that moment onto your clipboard. you then have to paste it into a program that can save it as a jpg (or in win2k- you can just press "cntrl" + "V" and it will paste the image file down on your desktop) and then you can view the image and save it as a __.jpg file

good luck.

that's only an issue with winXP home, which there are ways around. With winXP Pro (which I run, and aquired by "unorthodox means" prior to its release date) does not require activation.

As for compatibilitliy, run the installer and it'll give u a list of hte hardware u have that might have issues (you can always cancel if there is too much stuff that'll have problems). You have enuf ram to run it, but cuz of ur proc, u'll definately find it slower than ur current OS.

g'luck with it all!

The answer is yes I am running it on my 600e with 288 mb of ram with a 6 gig hard drive right know as I am posting this ( where did you get the extra 10 mb of ram the max is 288 )

It runs super and it alot faster on on start up than Windows 2000. All the drivers will be on the XP corp edition. And during install you can download all the IBM updates including the BIOS updates. I do this all day at work and I have an IMAGE now specific for the 600e, t20, t21,t22,t23.
