A fine start that went down the drain, '67 GTX

Had this nailpolish in my paint stock and thought it would make a nice hue on this Revell GTX. I also tried out a tip from SAE about BMF small scripts before painting. All started well and everything looked like it would work out just fine. Discovered that the Plymouth text on the hood was to shallow because it got totaly buried under the paint and would not polish through. Had some other issues with the paint and now it's all stripped off waiting for a respray. This time with a metallic red nailpolish on silver base as I'm out of this orange nailpolish and it's no longer available. But first I will try to foil copy the body scripts and then shave them off prior to painting. I'll be back with more as time goes by, don't excpect it to happen on this side of christmas though.

The tip was to put on the foil before painting so that fine detail don't get buried in paint. When you polish the paint the BMF comes out in the open. The good thing with this method is that you don't have to be so accurate when you put on the foil as the paint covers the edges of it. You can see in my pics that I have quite a lot of foil around the small scripts and all looked just fine but it was like a walk on the high wire to polish just enough to bring out the shine and not through to the plastic. Well, well...it's just to tuck the head in and give it another go.

That's the old one, I had four bottles and it took three to paint the whole car. So now I don't have enough to do it again in this gourgeous colour :banghead: But the red one I have is also a great looking hue so I'm not to sad, just a little.

No problems if you use the right primer. Tamiyas spraycans and Modelmasters metalizers does the trick for me. So now you can join your girlfriend when she goes shopping for make-up :grinno: and see the funny faces you get when the staff realizes that it's you who's to use the nailpolish :eek7: I found that my red nailpolish wouldn't last a whole body so I mixed it with two different shades of orange and now it looks almost pink :screwy: But I think it'll look good on the right type of undercoat, that is some darker hue like MM burnt metal. Well, well...we'll see what it looks like when done, I just put on the first primer coat today and has to fill in some imperfections and reshoot the primer again. I'll post some new pics later, now it's time to hit the sack and get some sleep.

I used Krylon primer on my nail polish Viper, Lightning and Will's Supra. I've seen oranges like that all over the place, I'm positive you can find it. It's pretty close to what I used on my Viper (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=305432) , actually. OPI makes one, but it's kinda pricey for nail polish. Shame, because they have a dead on GM Sunset Orange Metallic. I guess it's a lot easier for me to shop for nail polish though, being a girl and all :p

Small update on the current status of my GTX. Got the suspension together last night, lowered the front about 2-3 mm but left the rear end stock hight. Maybe I'll lower that later, haven't decided yet. shoot some grey Humbrol as a primer coat to reveal any imperfections and maybe I'll get some time to sand it back to night before putting on a second layer of primer. Also came to he conclusion that my red nailpolish wasn't enough. Made a custom mix of the one you can see in one of the pics and stired in two different shades of orange, one with a lot of flakes and one with more subtle flakes. Guess what? Now it looks almost pink :screwy: Anyway, I'll go with this colour as it looks quite cool.

Made some progress today again, I'm amazed with myself! The same project for two days in a row :screwy: :naughty: some sanding and then I shot MM burnt metal metalizer and hopefully on inspection I can proceed with the top coats in a day or two. The colour isn't really that goldish in real life, it's more greyish with a slight tint of gold in it. Keep your fingers crossed for me! BTW, I shaved of the badges and scripts as they didn't go unharmed out of the paint stripping. Maybe I'll get a new one and foil copy the scripts from that or I'll get a PE-set for it.

...and the story goes as follows. Took out my handy old Aztek and started spraying the nailpolish. All went well 'til I got to the hood, then it went crazy! It looked like the paint was boiling or something, ended up with more bubbles on the hood than you want to have in a jacuzzi! Oh well I thought! Strip it and do it again. Later I saw a little paint chip missing on the roof, drew my finger nail over the area and to my surprise the chips went flying of the roof...disaster struck...again! So now it's back in the old trusty brake fluid, the second time in about three weeks. I will give this nailpolish experiments a rest for the moment and just use the TS-range instead, got me some mica red and a bottle of gold as a base coat. Seeing Mike United's Skyline in that combo made me sick for a glowing red like that. Hey Mike, think of it as a tribute...not a imitation :-D Well, got my head stuck in a '59 Impala cab that I'm doing for my father as a gift, he's crazy about these cars. Maybe I'll make the whole line up for him as times go by.

Shame about that first color, it was awesome!!! I've never had good results from the paint over foil gig. I think you have to use little or no primer to keep the molded-in scripts crisp and detailed. Just go with MCG's detail set, they are awesome!
