Personally, I think a poem would have been a smooth move, if she didnt have a boyfriend. I have experience writing poetry for teh female, and boys, I can safely say it works. But not if there's another guy in the picture, then its just suicide.

You should just sit down and tell her how you feel face to face. Acknowledge that you know she has a boyfriend, and try and squeeze in something about you wanting her to be happy. You will probably get shot down, but at least she'll recognize your feelings. Best of luck!

But a letter is nice, there is one way it can backfire, is that she might think that you're not a strong enough of a guy to tell her in person how you feel if you do write her a letter. Just a hunch and a possibility.

If you do have this long history, and you are good friends, then you will be the first she turns to when/if the relationship falls apart. That's a good place to be. You've shown patience so far, you can hold out a little longer right? That is, if she's worth waiting for. Whatever you do, don't jump the gun, possibly ruining the friendship.
